What are the advantages/disadvantages of running a smaller rim with more sidewall on the tire vs. a bigger rim and less sidewall?

20" tires on a 8" wheel vs a 9" or 10" wheel

Smaller wheel and bigger tire is less of a chance of bending the wheel. Bigger rim and smaller tire is better handling. MX guys run 8" rear with 18" or 19" rears to prevent bending rims while jumping...

This maybe a stupid question but, is there a difference in running a 8" rim with a 20" tire Vs. a 9" rim with a 20" tire?

Yes, but only very slight. With a 8" and a 20 the tire's gonna be like a balloon. With the 9" it won't be as bad and will be slightly more firm in corners.

for 20" tires I would definitely use 9" rim.

So it wouldn't be the best idea to run 8" beadlock with a 20'' tire for XC.. Just asking because a boddy of mine has 8" beadlocks with 18's on them.. But he runs XC.. So he needs some 20's. I was just trying to figure out if that combo would work at all...

It will work no problem, if you got it then run it, but if you were goign to be purchasing I would go 20" with 9" rim. Just run it though. Its not that big of a difference

He has the 8'' beadlock but no tires.. He didn't know if he should buy the tires, or start all over and get new rims and tires..

I would just get tires myself but Im cheap too. He's already got the locks, just get tires and run it. If you got the money though, just start all over cause the 8" rims with 20" tires looks goofy too!:blah:

He will be fine running a 20" tire and 8" rims if he has beadlocks. You start running into popped beads and what not if you don't have beadlocks because there's just so much sidewall flex with that tire/rim combo. XC quads are supposed to be set up like that anyhow. You sacrifice some turning ability for higher ground clearance and a plusher ride.
