View Full Version : My hybrid YZ400 2 stroke Blaster

pb_paulie_b

This is my 88' Blaster I bought as a roller and grafted in a 79' YZ400. The 79' YZ400 is the rare small bore long stroke motor. With more stock HP than the Kawasaki bruteforce 750 this thing stands the wheels up in 3rd gear with a +4 swinger! I fabed and installed all the mounts and brackets myself as well as all the other work except the head pipe.

Here's a little write up I did for the plastic.
For the gas tank I first sprayed it down with a wax and grease remover via a rechargeable spray can. It saves a ton of money in the long run by letting you buy the remover in quarts and gallons and recharging the can with compressed air from your air compressor.
I then used 'OOOO' steel wool not pressing hard and only going in a straight line. The key is repetition. Pressing hard to save time only gouges the plastic and leaves marks that are probably worse than the scratch you were trying to get out. As it loads up just blow it out or get a new piece. Then I go over the entire piece again in a circular motion. Again lightly, Only to break up the previous straight line marks. A small circular motion is better than a large one.
I blow off the piece with compressed air. Give it a good wipe down with any lint free cloth or towel (I use shop rags that are blue and come in a roll cheap). We are ready to coat. I used Orange Glo on these but mop n Glo or Plastic renew is basically the same. I've learned that a foam brush is the best applicator. Dampen it with water, not dripping but just damp.--EDIT- wet the brush only if the directions say to do so. some do some don't-- Dip it in whatever product your using and apply. Experience will tell you how much to 'load up' on the brush. Too little will cause missed spots, too much will cause runs. Don't push down on the brush the product should just flow off of it, if not then you don't have enough on it. Try to only use long straight lines from one end to the other whenever possible to avoid start and stop marks and overlap brush marks. Try to get your coat on rather quick that helps to avoid brush marks too.
Finally don't try to go back and touch up spots that run or missed spots, it won't work and will smear whats there or cause lifting later. Think of coating as a one shot deal. Don't rush to get all the coats on. Let it dry thoroughly before your next coat. I like to use 3 to 6 coats. Too many coats will cause durability issues.
If you mess up don't worry just go over it with 'OOOO' steel wool and do over. If you have never done it before I suggest you learn on your smallest piece or another piece of plastic that's not as valuable to you.
This is for plastic that's not scratched or gouged real bad. For that your going to have to sand...
Here's a picture of everything I used for the tank. For roughly $20 not including the spray can you can do your whole bike-far less than the cost of even one piece of new plastic...PB
I would like to add that I went to the store and bought every 'plastic renew' product and my personal favorite is 'Future'...PB

Yes I polished it myself. I've been polishing things for years. The carb took about 7 hours. Don't be fooled by the polishing "how to" on this site. Real polishing is done on a wheel. I used a 3/4hp buffer and a spiral sewn wheel with 'green compound' for the flat areas and a dremel and felt bob for the hard to reach areas.

Cool project.I had a it400 motor in mine a few yrs back.i think i must have made a dozen pipes for that thing trying to get it just right. It ran like a raped ape up top, probably could do 80plus mhp with its wide ratio gearing. The vibes were kind of on the high side considering it was a air cooled big bore.I still have some vintage yamaha parts as i love these motors,EVEN the yz490,which i have gotten mine to actually run decently.I may build a yz490 blaster in the future.yours looks good,i like it;)

Thanks! I don't know what effect it has on the power band but I had to lengthen the pipe about 2 inches at it's head. The gearing is pretty high on mine. I can't even get into the power band in fifth, I'm goin so fast that it just feels like the front end is going to come apart :) I'm currently running 13/40 gearing.

Yeah extending the headpipe gave you more bottomend.even a quarter inch can make a difference on a 2 stroke.i opened up the exhaust port on mine and that thing just went crazy up top.it almost felt like a newer 250 on steroids.I also ran a carb from a 89 yz250.i figured a newer carb might help a bit.If you ever blow it up i belive i have a extra topend and crank for it;)

I love these old motors too. Unfortunately parts are hard to find, especially the 79'. I took the motor down to spec it out. The bottom end, rod and all the bearings are tight. The cylinder and piston are looking worn. I honed it and re-ringed it for good measure. I plan on detailing the motor and polishing some stuff while it's out as well as frame painting and powder coating as much as can fit in my oven :)
2muchquad, you really have an extra top end sitting around???? Details pleeze...PB

Yeah i have a cylinder with a new piston and rings.I couldnt tell you the size as its been in the garage out of site out of mind for a while.I also have my yz490 that used to have a yz465 topend on it too.I have a collection of misc vintage yamaha stuff including cdi,a couple flywheels and a stator i think.i also have a 76 it400 bottomend that i bought thinking it was the same as the 79 it400 i had...it wasnt:( I'll look tomorrow to see for sure about the cylinder

Just picked up an custom 426 big bore kit! Complete with piston, rings, bearings, and matching big bore head gasket. I'm stoked to say the least. Now just have to get a cheap thrashed cylinder. I'm NOT taking my virgin cylinder out that far, it would be too much of a waste of a good cylinder...PB

Thanks. I'm still workin' on it. Got to admit the vintage 88' red & white blaster color scheme isn't flashy but it does go. I got talked into going over the house of some dude I didn't know with a Kaw Bruteforce 750. I totally embarrassed him in a race. We were both surprised!

Flat black high heat paint.nothing shiny to draw attention to yourself, you want a unassuming lil'blaster sleeper;) If one asked about the motor looking different, just say its a 1978 yamaha dt250 "enduro motor":D

Haha I'm kinda in a rush to get it all back together and running. We have a new guy at work with some awesome trails and a field I might be able to get though 5th in. On a side note He's a younger guy and for some reason laughed when I told him the motor was older than him and air cooled. He has friends too 2 with Rappy 700's. Naturally they already want to race.....Awwwww it's funny how power turns a man into a kid again :D

Oh it vibrates just not the weld breaking, bolts falling off shakes that you hear about. Look closely at this vid of me reving. It's different then the other one. Some strange vibes squats the rear end.

I don't want to disparage anyone's work, especially not a work in progress but I think the kx500 vid is a bit misleading. The trike has folding footpegs and the spring that should keep it from flopping around is obviously missing. Also, no silencer, the pipe is probably not installed completely....it's a work in progress. I think I am going to move foward with my plan.

My quad somehow escaped all that. Could be the way I mounted it- flat steel on round frame or maybe because my crank is smaller with not as much weight swingin round in there. At any rate do it and start a build up thread I'd definitely check it out...PB

Thanks man. No I havn't driven it hard since the upgrades but not cause I havn't tried. Shes just too tired both the bore and the leaky stock jetted carb. You can bet I'm getting antsy! I called Boretech again today for an update and they said my jug should ship out today or Monday the hold up was the headwork. They are probably tired of me I've called 3 times since they got it. In preparations I re-packed the silencer that was half blown out. I replaced the tiny Uni filter that came with my airbox with an 8 inch K&N w/Outerwares cover. Also a set of 22x11x9 Razr's are coming on Weds. I'll save the mud tires for well mud... and snow! As usual my budget project has gone spiraling out of control :D

Dude, I know about getting antsy....I am waiting until I get back from out of town to sell my EX motor. I have 3 people interested in it, but working out of town means.......no sale! As soon as I get back and the EX motor is sold I am starting on my conversion!

She's all done and barely broke in. Here's are some longtime over due vids. First one is a rev up mostly to show the difference between now and the other one. It revs now-instantly!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1Pa9tPVNbE

Next up is me trying to catch some truck going about 50 down the road next to my field. I did but could hardy stop before my field ran out!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpePU0AxAXk

Last is some lame wheelies because I'm just not used to the power yet. All gas not clutching or pulling up :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdKd-DAiIYw

Thats it for now at least till I find a bigger area to open it up a bit.

I can't seem to get a good run out of it. The +4 swingarm isn't enough I guess. Even basically starting off at idle in 2nd pulls the wheels up and I have to let off. It's a problem that I can't complain about too much though ;)

your very welcome, i think some suspension work would do you alot of good. im not sure if you still have a problem with your rear end squatong while revving the bike but i would think with that much power in that little frame it would actually compress the shock while hitting the throttle. your crank must rotate towards that rear of the quad for my idea to work. this would also result in some big wheelies as well. JMO sorry if any of this has already been addressed

QIKLTR
10-10-2007, 06:00 PM
i may be completely off base so let me know as i am sure all of you will:cool: you have a lot more leverage on the rear shock as well with the extended swingarm.

pb_paulie_b
10-10-2007, 06:44 PM
lol yeah the rear does squat when I rev it up. I kinda thought it was from vibration/harmonics but I'm no rocket scientist. Let me just tell everyone a YFZ rear shock does not work good on a Blaster. It's too stiff. Obviously I could get a new rear shock but I'm done with it for a while and wheelies are fun :D
If I'm misunderstanding what your saying speak up ;)

I see also that you wrapped the exhaust. Mind telling me how many feet of wrap that used? I'm looking to do the same and would like to know how much i need to get. Also, did you notice a performance hit after doing it? I dont know how much seat time you have on it. I'm just looking for a clean cool exhaust look. (I hate melting pants against it! and plastic)

The job you did on it looks really nice.

pb_paulie_b
12-15-2007, 06:59 PM
The guy who ported my cylinder (Flotek) said it was a bad idea to wrap a 2 stroke pipe from a performance view. I trust his experience. However I still keep it wrapped where it runs against the plastic. I don't see a problem in wrapping the small area that your talking about. I used steel wire ties I got off Ebay to hold the wrap. They don't melt and work great...PB

dude i've been following this since the beginning and i was looking at it again and just wanted to say i love everything about this build...GREAT work, great attention to detail, no half-*****ing....A+.

i've always been a fan of blaster's...mostly cause its what i learned and grew up on, my first quad was a yellow 97 blaster, now like 12 fourwheelers later i think about all the money i've invested in the quads i've had since and wonder what kind of blaster i'd have if i just but it all into that...lol wouldn't have been the most practical but... prolly would have ended up somethin like yours.

i really do like it though, would almost considering trading my yfz for it :D

Thanks alot Clay!
It came out alot better then I ever expected.
The 79' is different from the other 400's in that it has a smaller bore and a longer stroke. Also with the 79' Yamaha changed the case and cylinder design. The 79' is the father of the YZ465 as well as the 490. It also makes the most power out of the bunch of 400's. You can pick up a 79' on Ebay from time to time. The $ range from $250 to an insane $650- the last one I seen on there went $650.
There is no dyno around these parts but I'd estimate the HP to be @ 60 maybe more with the alcohol.
Recently I've done some upgrades. I added a Nology pro-fire coil, I polished my now RDZ alcohol converted carb, blasted and painted my jug and pipe, and added a silencer/sparky from a Quadzilla.
Some fresh pics :)

The 76-78 Don't have the torque or the hp of the 79'. I'm referring to the stock ratings from back in the day. They are still good through and parts are easier to find for the earlier 400's. Their 85mm bore vs. the 79's 82mm gives them their top end reputation.
The 99' YZ400 is a 4 stroke.
It's bizarre that Yamaha named the 99' as a YZ400f because my 79' is also a YZ400f.
I got a bunch of old vids on youtube just type in '79 YZ400'

first off ,ever single aspect of your YZ400 'hybrid' is incredible and amazing.

i bet you can beat my buddies trx250r that is stroked, ported + polished by FBR and has fiber reeds...

but my question is... i notice you have those rear wheel spacers that are little studs you screw on. are they sturdy? do they hold up well? i want to invest in some but im worried they will break up on me
