I just bought me a 1997 300ex. I picked it up for $1300. It already had an exhaust with a header, and I just cut 4 holes in the top of the air box. It has a UNI filter. I am wondering if I should rejet it and if so what size should I try. The header did change to a yellow purple kind of color, and it seems to have some back fire. The only other thing that was done to the engine is 2 years ago it got a new topend. The sleeve was polished only, not bored out. Thanks in advance if anyone could help me. I just bought a 400ex front end with shocks off ebay and will be installing that soon along with new holeshot tires. I will get picks posted up tomorrow.

Sounds like your running pretty lean. It maybe on stock jetting still. I'd go up a couple jets, and see how that goes. Keep going up until it runs worse, then go back to the last jet attempted.

throttle positions-
0-1/4 -- pilot jet
1/4-3/4 -- needle
3/4-full -- main jet

Custom bracket I built yesterday to hold the key, nuetral light, and reverse light. Turned out pretty nice.

Thanks for the comment. Got the tires on today. I will post new pics tomorrow. About that bracket I built, it took me about 1 1/2 hours to get the plate to fit just right. I had to notch it so the wires and hoses would fit, and it was alot of drill and check to make the two lights and the key socket fit perfect. Its better than having them held up with zip ties. Now I just have to think of more stuff to do to it.

Before you get carried away buying new parts for it, I would at least make sure the maintenance is up to par first. Check all your bearings and remove the pivot bolt so you can grease it. Air filter, adjust your valves, fresh oil change, etc. I wouldn't worry about your front end though since you're replacing it.;)
