hard to get into neutral

so i just picked up a 2000 400Ex with an 05 motor. the only thing is it is nearly impossible to get the thing in neutral. what could most likely cause this? thanks in advance

not too sure what causes it but it's a common problem with the 400ex. It's easier to shift into neutral if you give it a little gas.

This is a known problem on 400EX's that plagues some while others have no problem. For example, my 400EX has no problems finding neutral whereas my dad's is virtually impossible to find. My dealer tried to identify a source of the problem a couple of times and said they adjusted things and it works fine, but within ten minutes of riding it, you couldn't find neutral again. We have since just learned to deal with it. This same question comes up on here every so often and to the best of my knowledge, I don't think anyone has really come up with a cause or a solution.

i know when i bought my 02ex i had that same problem, when i finally had to put a new clutch in it that seemed to fix the problem

just guessing, I would start with adjusting your clutch cable length. That being at the clutch perch on your bars.
try blocking the hind end of your quad up. slip into a low gear and let out slowly on the clutch. adjust your cable until the rear wheels don't spin when the lever is pulled in.

ok, thanks for the input guys. so i shouldnt really worry about it being a problem with my trans or anything? i will start with trying to adjust the clutch cable. im new to the honda world, so i dont really know much about common problems with these machines. i had two raptors (craptors) before this. i know it recently had a new clutch installed so maybe the cable is jjust poorly adjusted.

thats even better yet knowing it has a newer clutch installed. If your living right, it should just need the cable adjustment.

its sounds like its not releasing all the way

I adjusted and lubricated the clutch cable, and I can find neutral much easier now.
