Not sure if this will get moved or not, here it goes.

I'm sure there are other 400ex owners out there that are like me----not happy with the aftermarket offerings for cooling a 400ex. After looking around and doing some research, I purchased a 01' CBR1100 oil cooler. With a little fabrication for the cooler mount and modifying the return line, it fits like a glove.

BTW--The stocker measures 2.5" tall x 10" wide--5 pass.

CBR--3 5/8" tall x 12" wide--8 pass.

If there's some interest shown, I'll take some pics and post them up. The cooler is bolted in place of the stocker--not in addition to it.

Pics would be sweet. I'm going with double stock oil coolers this year... maybe I'll change my mind after I see yours. Thanks!

Deffinately interested. I added air scoops and was looking at the cooler wondering if there was a way to upgrade it.

I'll start off by saying the frame on my quad needs powdercoated badly, it's not done yet because of the oil cooler situation. Also, the oil cooler in the pics look rough, I wasn't sure if my idea was going to work and I didn't want to spend the money on a new one and have it not work. So I found one that didn't leak for cheap. Now that I know it works, I'll buy a new one and replace it.

Here's the installed cooler, the cooler lines are now routed on the outside of the frame.

Initially, I was concerned about routing the lines outside the frame. After the installation was complete, I don't believe it will be an issue. The chance of something hitting the high pressure line, or a branch ripping it are slim to none.

Here is what i did to mine,It is a 13 row oversized oil cooler with an accufab oversized oil tank.Total oil capacity is 3.7 quarts.I beat the snot out of this bike and it never ever comes close to overheating! this thing has been tested from the mud and rocks of southern appalachia to the arctic cold of northern quebec all the way to moab and the glamis sand dunes http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2137017810068988411MbNagc?vhost=rides http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2907681060068988411IVIOTd?vhost=rides http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2729445010068988411OVuNzP?vhost=rides http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2929771930068988411jMRvRI?vhost=rides http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2591632260068988411cKDKJp?vhost=rides http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2404111540068988411GTMGoL?vhost=rides http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2346285960068988411ovekJn?vhost=rides http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2703367830068988411jzYtXx?vhost=rides http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2684482570068988411vOzzLE?vhost=rides http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2969024380068988411zLKOFs?vhost=rides http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2972803190068988411OSeNIy?vhost=rides http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2858375300068988411CFYemE?vhost=rides

FWM--

Sweet quad, I dig the oil cooler setup as well.

I tried to contact Desert Toyz several times via e-mail and never got a response. As I was looking for a streetbike cooler, I was also looking for other options and never found any that I liked.

Today was the first ride with the new cooler installed, I hope it makes a noticable difference. I only rode it for about 10 minutes today, not long enough to tell.

Great pics fwm, looks like a fun place to ride. For that kind of riding, I have a tricked out Honda Rincon 650. My EX is just for the trees.

Was that oil cooler a kit and do you have a brand name??

Did the stock lines hook up to the oil cooler without modification? or did you have to use hose clamps and such to get the lines on there.

The high pressure line on the right side needed to be tweaked lightly for it to line up to the cooler, otherwise it bolted right up.

For the return line, I used one of the lines that came with the CBR cooler and cut it to the desired length. I cut the stock line so I could get the factory nut and installed it on the CBR line. At that point, I flared the end of the line, bent a 90 in it and bolted it up.

There aren't any hose clamps in my setup. Also the stock high pressure line support--the one that attaches to the lower motor mount--is also still in place and used.
