View Full Version : How do I fix the Stiff Throttle on an '06 Honda 450

I was wondering what everyone has done to help fix the stiff throttle on an 06 or newer TRX450R. The throttle is much stiffer than an '05 so I need some help to lower the throttle stiffness without having to put on a thumb saver.

Thanks

Look up TokyoMods, they have a spring for the FCR that has a softer pull to it. I just ordered mine a couple days ago, and should have it on for this weekend.

I'll even save you the trouble of looking them up...lol. Their number is 888-457-9403.

put on a thumb throttle assembly from a 04-05. thats what i did. easier push, and its half the size of the 06 throttles.

anything previous to a 06 will work. 250ex,300ex,400ex,450r

the thumb throttle on a trx 90 is longer making it easier to push more leverage

I have all of the above mentioned. Tokyo Mods spring, 400ex throttle and a 90 thumb lever.

Did you use the spring without the throttle and lever? Just wondering if it will make that much of a difference.

Yeah I have just the spring on there now and would say it's a bit lighter then stock, but hard for me to say. I haven't rode for a long period of time with it which seems to me where it would help the most. I do think the 90 lever will be the best though. The lever is longer and flatter.

Thanks for all the info.

What did you guys do with the throttle position sensor when you put on the 400EX throttle lever housing?

if you just unplug it.... the bike will start and idle, but die when you want to go.

trace the wire back to the connector, leave a few inches and cut the connector off, then solder the 2 wires together. plug the connector back into harness, you'll be all set.

Are the levers the same on all year 90's?

I do believe so. My part # is 53145-HF7-000. You can check with Colby at C&D to double check. He told me they sell a lot of them. It should work in your stock throttle housing as the 04-05 have the old style.

Just wondering...with the 400ex throttle/trx90 lever combo dont you have to get a throttle cable made?Isnt it a different pull length? Can colby sell ya a package deal?

I just talked to Colby and he said you don't need a different throttle cable.

sweet! I might look into to doing that then. Any idea how much that setup runs? 400ex throttle housing/trx90 lever.

Well I think if you order all new parts it is $80-$90 from Service Honda. I would do that, because I bought a used throttle and ended up buying new internals anyways so I spent about the same. I have all the part numbers if you want them.

so...there isn't any timing/running changes or disadvantages to messing with the throttle sensor when doing this mod?

will the 90 lever go onto the stock 06 housing?

this is only a "safety feature" that honda put on thier quads [lawsuits]. this is not the tps system.

Well I must have thrown the list away. Go to an online OEM Parts finder and go under 04-05 450R. Then under handle levers/cables/switches you can see the throttle. Order everything you see except the lever, you'll have to go under a 90 to get that. When ordering if you do online take #11 from the finder. It includes items #10, 16, and 36. So you'll need #38, 9, 37, 42, 30, 12, 14, 11, 31, 15, 39, and then the 90 lever.

You guys rock! I just modified mine last night WOW!!! I got the Tokyo mods spring, 400EX housing, & TRX 90 lever. For an added bonus, I even removed the spring from inside the throttle housing. I just need to wire the switch out of the system still.

The 90 lever will not fit into the '06 housing because the square raised portion on the thumb throttle itself is set at a different angle.
