can't adjust valves properly help

Trying to adjust the valves. When I rotate the flywheel counter clockwise, the intake valves open and close and as soon as they close I look for the t, but it is almost another half turn before it shows up. What am I doing wrong?

Nothing.That is how it should be.The intake valve opens a little before the piston starts downward travel and the intake valve closes a little after it starts upward travel then you have almost a half of a turn till the piston reaches TDC(top dead center).

You want the engine on TDC compression stroke. Rotate the crankshaft counter clockwise while watching the valves. When the intake valves start to close, look for the TDC mark and line it up.
