Do you HAVE to have the engine at TDC of compression stroke to take the head cover off? Also, what happens if u turn the crank clockwise rather than counter-clockwise?

You don't have to but you should be. If you're not then the rocker arms will be under tension holding some of the valves open.

If you turn the crank the wrong way while the (stock) cam is installed then the anti-kickback device on the cam will engage. Again, this will cause one of the rockers to engage it's valve and hold it open.

You want all the rockers unloaded before you unbolt the cover.
