Just like the title, what are some machines and/or vehicles that have always amazed you. I have always been amazed by Oshkosh Military and Fire trucks.

cruise ships...how do they float? theyre like 293840324 pounds and can float. the physics of that is beyond me

it is something to do with density .. 1 g/ml = water so a cruise ship must be less than that measurement in order to float

It has to do with displacement. All boats must displace more weight in water than what they weigh in order to float. They are mostly hollow, and push a lot of water out of the way.

Think about this. A small BB, and a ping pong ball. Both weigh about the same, right? (in fact, I think the ping pong ball is actually heavier, but let's say they weigh the same)

If you put them in water, what happens? The BB sinks, but the ping pong ball floats. Why is that, if they both weigh the same?

The answer is displacement, like clubert says. How much water does an object push out of the way (displace), and how much would that water weigh?

A 1gram BB displaces only 0.5 grams of water. The BB weighs more than it displaces, so it sinks. But a ping-pong ball is much larger, it displaces 50grams of water, but only weighs 1 gram. It weighs less than it displaces, therefore it floats.

Thats why oil floats on top of water. It is less dense. Anyone that eat salads knows this.

^LOL^LOL^LOL hA

but i get how the cruise ship floats, it still amazes me

The F-14 (may God rest her soul). Designed in the late 60s, but you'd never know it.

Along those same lines, the XB-70 Valkyrie and of course the SR-71 Blackbird. Believe it or not, both concepts conceived and started in the late 50s... And both were capable of (at least) Mach 3. Much faster than anything that existed in the same era... and today.

A lot of stuff on the show "Future Weapons." The unmanned aircraft planes are incredible.

The rotary engine is sweet. So are the thermal motors that can run off the heat from your hand, or a cup of coffee.

i never understood why rotary motors never caught on...they seem to be very impressive

Because they blow up after 50K miles and are rather unefficient.

They do make good power and are pretty neat in the way they work. But their handicaps are why they never 'caught on'. ;)

i like the Nissan Skyline GTR R-34 or however its worded

and i like profesional sports 18wheelers/haulers. like Nascar's, or the team kawasaki, or team suzuki haulers.

actually the only company that ever did the rotary engine right was mazda and they still sit on the patent, and will never give it up. BUT the old mazda RX7's with the rotary taken care of have run for up to 600,000km's so around 450,000 miles as long as they were taken care of properly. and if i'm not mistaken the RX8 is a rotary....not positive though

I'm talking about the Mazda rotary...

There MAY have been a one in a million car that was lucky to make that, but it's never been duplicated if so. And I'm sure Mazda was all over that thing and praising it up. Still not sure I'm going to take your word on that miracle. Got a link or other form of proof?

No rotaries ever make it that far. The majority of them barely get over 50k, and the most I've ever seen one eek out was 78k.

Oh and the RX-8 has had nothing but problems already... Mazda is kicking themselves for doing the same mistake once again. lol My neighbor is a Mazda dealer tech and I guess it's been a real headache, they've been doing a lot of motor replacement on cars that aren't off warranty yet.

Also, like the aircraft carrier ships and other big ships, look like really wide at the top like where the air strip is then they go down to nothing when the hit water like \/ but under water they go out and have like a wide turret shape, so that keeps them stable and afloat. Its like.

And the mine setter are you talking about a Minesweeper?

And yeh I was gonna say 250r's, every time I ride mine I'm just amazed at how it is and the power, how it rips my arms off.

And the F/A-18 is AWSOME! Apache's I like too.

They rotary's do suffer from fast wear just because of how to motor is made. Maybe when we have some special material they will last as long as internal combustion engines.

The Mazda 13B rotary engine has many flaws and does wear quickly. Not uncommon for them to need a complete overhaul around 70,000 miles or so even with good care. thats why they stopped making/selling the rx7 here in america. But they did keep making and selling it in japan till 2001 or 2002. and yes the RX8 is a big pos as well. Rotarys make awesome power but the reliability is none. The main problem with the rx8 engine is that they flood out and are very temprimental when starting. Especially in cold weather.

the nissan skyline r34 nismo spec v is one of the most bad *** cars ever made. 500 awd hp is unreal for a stock car. Id love to have one.

theres lots of machines that amaze me and i wouldnt even be able to list them all. technology has come a really long way in 100 years and 100 years from now im sure will be unreal.

Anything with an engine amazes me. I've been studying physics and mechanical engineering for the past 4 years of high school and just to think about some of the components of motors and how they work just astounds me.:)

Doctors amaze me.. They can make or break your life.. They know things that I'd NEVER EVER know.. Pretty neat. Motors amaze me too.. Motors are an addiction to me as beer or smoking is to others. I have a 1968 Camaro and I put my eyes on it EVERY night. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/ryan01400EX/113-1328_IMG.jpg
