05 450r, 185main, stock pilot, stock needle on 4th clip. Seems to be running good, but the backfiring. Can I turn the fuel screw more than 2 time out? Will that help?

Turn your fuel screw to about 2 1/2 turns. If its still backfiring go up 1 size on your pilot. You want to stay around 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 on your fuel screw. Not much more than that.

Yea I have a few pilot jets, I didn't think I would be able to change the pilot, seems like a pain in the ***, this is my first time doing this. Can I ride it like this for one day? I'm supposed to go ride tomorrow for a few hours.

Why is your needle on the 4th clip?

Bigger pilot jet.

Start with like a 50.
Adjusting the stock pilot out probably won't be enough to stop the popping.

When u put the new one in set it right to 2.5 turns out and start from there.

If it still pops go to a 52, if u have crappy off idle throttle response compared to before you switched it then turn it in a 1/4 turn at a time until its good.

thanks guys, to change the pilot, do I need to take the carb. totally off? This is my first time doing this, the main jet and needle were a piece of cake. Any tips for doing the pilot jet?

The last time I changed my pilot I just loosened the front and rear and air boots on the carb and tilted it so the float bowel was facing me better.

Its kind of a pain to tilt the carb, you have to like push down on it as you tilt it because the top hits something (forget what).

Then I took the float bowel off and took the pilot out with a really small short screw driver.

Just try turning the air screw out 1/4 turn untill it stops doing it. Then turn the screw in counting the turns and tell us how many turns it was.

Shouldn't go more then 2 1/2 to 3 turns out with the pilot screw. Anymore and it will fall out.

If you have to go more then 2 1/2 turns out, go with the next size up.

This thing feels faster, and sounds much better with this Dasa pipe, can't wait to get my cam installed!

yea loosen the boot clamps and turn the carb as far ur way as possible... taken the bowl off aswell. sounds like next size up might fix it... most of the time u can get close but never on spot.. as with my quad i got some poppin on decel...

try to turn a bit more and see if it fixes it.
