is there a way to tell before you open the motor if its the seals or the rings that are gone? thanxs

You need to do a leak down test.

If the valve seals are gone you'll be burning oil on startup and on deacelleration. If rings are bad then do a compression test, or if you burn oil on heavy acceleration.

on the 400, and i could be wrong, and if i am i know somebody will correct me,
But i don't think you can a compression test with a stock cam, you have to do a leak down test.

With the automatic Decompression on the stock cam, i don't think you can get it to crank over fast enough to get an accurate reading.
