I am running 22' rear tires and wondering what size front sprocket I need to go with. I do alot of trail riding but I don't want to top out to easily either. Or how would I go about figuring the gearing out on it that would work best. My quad is a 06 400ex so it has a 14t stock front sprocket. thanks

go with a 13t you want run out of gear and should be able to lug it down in 2nd in trails where u hadn gotta ride the clutch and fisrt isnt tall enough.

I might leave the gearing alone as stock..The larger tire size will allow you to run the quad in second gear and third gear a little more..also will make 1st a little more useful...my 2 cents

I think in the trails the 15/38 ratio works best. with 20's on the rear for clearence. too tall and you dont get good wheel spin to break it loose around a corner.

Yes, this is a good trail setup (what I use actually) but his 2006 comes with a 14/38 setup that will automatically give him more low-end than a '99-04 400EX. Add to it his 22" rear tires and he needs lower gearing to turn a taller tire. Therefore, do not go up in size. I would suggest staying the same or maybe going to 13/37 setup to get more low-end while keeping most of the top speed.

I'm for the 13 tooth at the front. I thing you'll find it's a cheap opton for more low end power with running the larger wheels.

Your 14/38 w/20's has a ratio of 2.71

Your 14/38 w/22's has a ratio of 2.47

A 13/38 w/22's has a ratio of 2.66

To get closer to stock,

13/39 = 2.73
14/42 = 2.73
12/36 = 2.73

Some similar #'s within 5% of stock gearing and 22's

13/37 = 2.59
14/40 = 2.60
15/43 = 2.61

The 13/38 will be a little taller and might be your best bet.

Thanks for the help I actually went with a 13t front and worked out good. If I don't like it back to smaller tires.
