cam chain tensioner

i have a 99 400ex pretty much stock, it just started to develop a knocking sound in the top end of the motor, it has a new cam chain in it so i took the tensioner out to look at it and it was fully compressed(not extened) does anybody know if that is the problem. thanks

i just replaced my chain tensioner in my EX, and when it went, yes it made the most awful sound. most of the time the little wind up spring inside the tensioner breaks which causes it to fail. they are like 60 new, but they are like 40 on ebay:D
