Do you think that I should use a 40 or a 42 pilot jet at this elevation I know everyone uses a 42 but I have not heard of anyone at high altitude 6000-9000 ft post on this topic someone has got to ride in the real mountains

I would honestly think at that altitude, a stock 38 would be fine.

I would also but it still has the cold start problems and I do run a K&N filter, no lid, and a slip on

A 38 pilot should be fine, change your main jet though.

What would you recomend for the main. a 150 - 152 I may try the 40 pilot just to see if it will help the cold starting I can always change it back

At or above 3000ft your suppose to go to a 138 main, but for you I would go with a 130 main.

The manual said to go 142 but the plug was pretty white with that so I have a 148 in and a 38 pilot right now

O then try a 152 main then. Which manual do you have? mine gives the stock setting and a high alt setting.

If it's still a pita to start cold, I would bump it up to a 40 like you said then, that should take care of it. As far as main, I can't even guess. I tune off plug color though and it sounds like you are doing the same so your on the right track.

I can start it cold it just wont stay running even with the choke I still gotta feather the throttle or turn the idle up to keep it going but then once it is warmed up it does fine. It may have to do with the temp right now that I am lean but my service manual for a 2005 said 142 for high alt. I run without the airbox lid and have the K&N and slip on and rev box my plug has been a bit on the white side so I am thinking I will try the 40 pilot in the morning and the 150 main if that is too rich then I will go back to the 148 for 6000 and then 145 at 9000 I will try to keep you posted right now I am at a 148 main and 38 pilot at 6000ft and 30 deg f

I think you're on the right track. A 148 or 150 main and a 40 pilot. You're kind of on your own being so high in elevation.
You're not alone on the idle issue. No matter what I do, my quad will not idle by itself when it's cold. I could raise my idle but, when it warms up, it's too fast.
