I have seen aluminum heads for cars tig welded up. and I have seen chunks of of a crank welded up to. so its possible.
I would find a high end auto machine shop and ask them.

good thinking, I never even thought of that. Weld that chunk in and sand it smooth on the inside. We did it on a few dirtbikes that threw chains. It is certainly a better solution than jb weld. Any news on that car?

yeah man - I fixed an ol' LT 250 ( a long time ago) - had it welded and spent time fileing it down - and for where the cases meet gaskets between them - I used wet sandpaper taped to a piece of glass , laying on top of my bench & worked the case in a circular motion over the sandpaper untill it was perfect .........ran it for quite a while after that before I sold it

I have replaced 3 sidecase covers and the last one it actually cracked the case to. I had it welded , it warped just a little bit. I just used silicone with the gasket and it sealed for a long time it has just started to leak. this was on my 04.. never had the problem on my 06 kicker..

I've seen some butch jobs with j/b weild and other stuff. The best way is to either replace the cover or spend some time weilding it and grinding it down. The only thing is by time you pay someone to weild it and you grinfd it down it might be worth just do it right and replacing the left side case

if your goin to have a machine shop weld the cases you should have them figure out how to put it in a milling machine so that it will end up perfect

make sure they dont heat them to much and warp them , if seen that happen to a few side cases before , not sure if that would happen with the center cases or not .
