400ex starter

hey guys quick question, I have an 01 400ex and the starter doesn't seem to be working. It will make a clicking sound near the starter and wires coming from the battery when I try to start it. Its like it wont engage the starter. Its not the battery since it will start once in a while. Just wondering if i need to replace the whole starter and celenoid or if it something else. Thanks for the help.

if your battery is good, and your soleniod is good, you need to replace the cantact brushes in the starter i have to do the same thing to my 300, cuse it just clicks but if you tap on the stater it will fire up

my celenoid recently went out on my 2002 400ex, sounds like the same problem to me

How would you know if the solenoid or the brushes are bad?

ight it deff sounds like the solenoid go out and put ur had on the solenoid and hit the start button and if u can feel the tick from it then its bad but try hitting it alittle it might work and start the quad.

yep, i agree with everybody else. i had the same problem and i believe it was like $60 to replace it.

ya i just started having that same problem..it was all fine until i washed it today. when i went to start it up, the solenoid started clicking but the starter didnt do a thing.

but when i push start it, it starts right up.
