Is there a special trick to removing this and I just don't get it?

Or do i need to buy the tool from Honda?

i believe that it is staked like the 300 is on the clutch and countershaft. Try using an impact gun and its probaly reverse thread...:D

there is a special tool for it you can get from your honda dealer. if you have a freind help you and your VERY careful you can wedge a screw driver between the gear and use a small chisel or pry bar against the locking nut and hit it with a hammer. be very careful!!!!!!

I used an impact on all of mine. I just took mine apart and for the life of me cant remember which your talking about. I know one nut wasn't a regular nut, but the correct name slips my mind. Either way none of them were reverse thread. I didn't use a single special tool on mine.

On the clutch side of the case.

You have the clutch, then the gear to the right, then the counter balancer with a weird locknut on it. I think it is 24 x 20 but is has cutouts in it. The end of the shaft is also weird.

this is a picture from my crf motor but its the same on the trx.
the gear to the far right is what he is talking about, there is a special socket to remove it. it is not reverse thread.

Spanner socket!! Thats it!! Heres what one looks like. I had some too, but none big enough to fit it.

scroll down a little bit and you'll see it... countershaft spanner sprocket...

yeah screwdriver and hammer didn't work for me either. I had to use a punch and a bigger hammer. Tapped it twice and it popped right off.

Put a penny in between the gears. The copper is softer than the steel gears. It will bind them so you can break it loose.

So what is the exact size of it so I can pick up the socket for reinstallation and future use?
