I somehow managed to pull that off with stock bars.

Myself, I went with MSR CRhi's because they are an el cheapo bar that will definately bend before the stem and I am not a fan of replacing the steering stem.

I flipped my 400EX and bent the Stock Bars and Steering Stem. If the bars or bar clamps are rubbing the top of the gas tank, than the odds are pretty good that you bent the steering stem too. Pull it off and check it out. It should be straight. There should be no angle to it at all.
I replaced the stock steering stem and went with a set of Trail Tech Bar clamps and
1 1/8" Medium Bend X-Bars. They came with a replacement plastic trim piece to house the ignition key and neutral/reverse lights. They make the trim piece to fit 1999-2004 and 2005-Up versions. The bars come in 3 bends (low, medium, and high). I got the medium bend because they are nearest to a stock setting.
Check them out here:

Get tapered bars (1 1/8") and you won't have that problem :D

My 400ex seems to have a low rise bar on it and I'd like to go a little taller like the guy with the Renthals posted above. Can you go taller and have the thottle cable and brake cable still reach?

Bent my stock bars and my stem. Got Renthal 7/8, stem, and grips for $150 shipped from www.motosport.com. Nice high bend that was easier to adapt to than I thought it would be.

has anyone tried the moose bars? i cant remember what they are called but they have no cross bar and taper to 1 1/8". they cost 65$ and i have been thing about getting them. aso, if i get a Cr high bend of them, will my stock cables reach and all of my stuff still fit properly?

that should be fine, and they are a pretty good bar too. the only thing is that you will need oversized mounts because the stock bars are 7/8"

I have a pair of renthal bars as well. They are much better than stock. My buddy has an all stock 04 400ex and his machine feels like a totally different quad because of his stock bars. IMO the stock bars are too narrow and low. While you're at it get some hand guards to.

cr high bends are considerably lower than stock. heres my pro taper se cr high's to show how tall they are.

yes they are, but if he gets the 1 1/8 inchers like he said, he will have to get larger clamps. usually a larger clamp will also be a taller clamp because that is how most companies make them.

just a warning, if you want taller bars with the CR high, make sure you get a taller stem or clamps

I had these cheapo MSR ATV bars already so I made them work. Much taller then stock. Seems more comfortable. Time will tell.

i like them taller than stock. the only reason that i wish they were lower than stock is for wheelies. i feel more in control with a lower bend when i got the front end off the ground. it is probably because i am not leaning as far back with a lower bend...idk...
