My buddy and I run a pretty bad 300ex too. We are running 18" Holeshot SX's outback. right now we are running 14/36.
But we have a 32 and 34 Sidewinder on order. With the 36 out back we are still not able to use 1st gear. If you look around on line you can find a gear chart and take some of the guess work out of it.

you want at least a 16 if you dont want the gears to wind out to quick

a 16 in th front?? thats a little high isnt it ? seeing thats stock is like a 12 i think doughwarrior yah i have 20 inch holeshot xcrs with stock gearing and it has like the same speed as a stock 300ex so i need to do something about this so i think im gonna try a 14 up front and keep the 38 in the back see what that does

yeah your right im thinking of my 400ex it has a 15 tooth stock.maby a 15 would be good for your 300 tho but just buy a 15 and a 14 see wich one you like better then take one back they are pretty cheap

Since front sprockets are cheaper i would try a 14 and then maybe try the 36 or 34 with it. If none work you could always send them back.

If you'll give me the stock gearing on your 300EX, stock tire size, I have a formula on a spreadsheet that will give you an idea of what each sprocket combination will give you in regards to final drive ratio and also compensates for different tire sizes.

I have one for a 400EX if anyone is interested.

Stock gearing on a 300ex is 13/38 w/ 22" 2-ply tires.

Riding styles:
Fire roads
14/38 w/ 22" tires
14/36 w/ 20" tires

Tight Woods
13/38 w/ 22" tires
13/36 w/ 20" tires

Dunes:
14/38 w/ 20" 6-paddle gliders.

MX:
13/38 on 20" tires
14/38 on 18" tires

That would be my reccomendations.

Yeh man, he needs a 16 but that won't fit on it, I think a 14 makes it barely, so I don't even think a 15 would fit.

And stock is 13 bud.
