I'm installing a new slip on and K&N filter on my 400ex. I changed the jet and pilot no problem. When I removed the slider to raise the needle I found it wasn't adjustible. It only had one groove. What gives? I planned on raising it one groove. It's a 05. Is their something special about that year or is this unusual and I will need to get a new needle?

The '05 and newer do not have an adjustable needle. Simply purchase a 1990-2004 needle and use it instead. Those have adjustment grooves. Or as a last thought you could use a .03" washer under you existing needle to raise it up.

Since the 05 isn't adjustable should I even worry about it unless I have a fuel problem. I'm installing a White Brothers E2 slip on, K&N and removing airbox lid. I installed a 42 pilot and 155 main to start and have a 158 if needed. Most things I read recommended raising the needle 1 notch.

Unless you need it, I wouldn't bother with it right now. Sure it gives you more adjustments to be finicky but like most of us you'll probably have it in one spot and never mess with it again.

You can buy a 1999 to 2004 adjustable needle or buy a Dynojet Kit. The kit also has an adjustable needle. I own a 2006 400EX and I installed the Dynojet needle. If you do get an adjustable needle, with your mods I would put the clip on the 3rd or 4th slot down from the top. To make the mid-throttle range richer because of added mods you would move the clip DOWN.
