View Full Version : Chino886's Virgin Rebuild

Well, my motor decided to take a dump on me while I was racing in a arena last weekend so the tear down has begin! I have never been down in the bottom of the motor before so it will be interested. In about 2 hrs my bro and I got this far.

Enjoy the pics! I will keep this thread update of the new parts that roll in.

Chino!

1st pic-I pulled the head off and the top of it looked fine, I was kind of excited, then I got the wrist pin off to find this!

Chino886
02-24-2007, 10:54 PM
Then I take the piston after seeing copper flakes, and when I mean flakes, I thought the clear oil I put in came out copper color...:eek2:

You can clearly see lots of remnants in the oil and all over both sides of the case.

Chino886
02-24-2007, 10:55 PM
Well, I thought the head would be damaged for sure, but it did not look too bad, just one small nick in one of the EX valves as you can see in the pic.

Chino886
02-24-2007, 10:57 PM
Here are some more pics of the flakes that were everywhere! I am definitely going to be splitting the cases and most likely be replacing the crank!

Got a little thirsty while I was working up a sweat!

Well fellas, more pics will be up later today.

I am looking for OEM crank and another HC piston, I hope that is all I will need!

put in new crank bearings, timing chain/tensioner, oil pump. Do all the oil seals and gaskets as well. Its all insurance for the future!

I dunno how many hours are on your 450 but its even a good idea to have the valves and head checked and if need be put in new valves and have new seats cut in the head. youll be happy when its all new and tight. Itll run like a champ or even better.

Well, the new OEM crank assembly comes with new crank bearings. I am going with a new cam chain for sure. Oil pump, I don't know about that. Maybe a new water impellar.

All gaskets and seals will be replaced, this is going to be my first time messing with a 450R motor, so I will be double checking everything.

Thanks brotha,

1/2 way done on teardown, need to find a flywheel puller, for much less than what Honda wants first.

After that, I will start slinging $100 bills for parts!

Then, I will complete my build that will have 50 more ponies than when I started.:p (it did not run, so it has zero! LOL!)

I just bought a flywheel puller off of Trailtech and it worked great. It cost about $20 i think. Popped it right off there. ;)

Well tonight I got the clutch out, took the clutch sidecase off and nothing in there looked too scary!

Chino886
02-25-2007, 08:37 PM
There were some small nicks on the basket, very small, I think I could get those out with some steel wool and be good to go!

I think the previous owner took out the judder spring and added the extra clutch fiber in there!

My complete clutch and cover in a box!

Your not kidding!!! I ordered all my parts already for mine Chino, but service honda sent me a wonderful email letting me know that one of the crank bearings is on national back order...:ermm:

I'm not sure about the 06's but the 04/05 cranks only come with one bearing as far as I can tell. Not both crank bearings.

Yeah, I want to stay "legal" for a Production class! I plan on doing a national TT race and I don't want to run OPEN!

I may do the stroker on the next rebuild now that I know how "easy" it is.

I also heard that they are not available till the end of March/early April.

I got mine off with a universal puller. Put it on and put some tension on it then give the puller a couple whacks with the hammer and it should pop right off. Mine actually shot off and hit me and the leg. It had a lot of tension on it!:eek2:

I am going to keep it "production". I am going with a OEM crank, but if this happens again, I will be going with a Hot Rods +3.

I found a killer deal on a brand new crank and piston combo, could not pass it up.

I don't think that parts were $3600 for your motor, if I remember correctly Chad502ex posted that you can buy a new motor from Service Honda for $3K.

That must be parts and labor.

I don't expect to go over $1000 with my entire rebuild! :eek2:

Try $195 buddy. Servicehonda, and if its an 04/05 you can get the update one for that price which isn't listed on their page. The ones that are listed are $210ish.

This is for a Honda crank with the rod already installed and the new crank bearing with seal and new bushing. That was $195ish from servicehonda.

OEM is cheaper than the hotrods crank, the falicon one is a honda modded one that is $700. Hot rods are not as good as the honda ones IMO.

Hey Brock, my cases are still on order, probably won't make it this year like I was planning but I guess stuff happens and it stinks. If I don't have anything going on, I might head up there to check it out.

chino886 - I got my motor back in the frame, and was cleaning the metal shavings out of the right side case cover and found that I have a cracked case as well. My looks like its a victim from the kickstarter however, right near the bearing for the gear of the kicker. I am really not liking little brothers right now.

Every time I get up to my uncles to try and put this thing together I find something else wrong. I was gonna snap some pics for you last night too, and I had my camera on charge at my appt and completely forgot to grab it. Oh well I guess monday I should be able to snap some pics. How is yours coming along? Still waiting for cases?

Hey Man sorry to hear about that! If it is cracked you should be able to have it fixed, but mine were stress cracked from the crank being thrown around in the cases and chunks were broken out.....

The right hand case is the one that takes a while too......

I am still waiting on my large shipment to arrive at my honda dealer.

Thanks Chad, I wanted to have it back together sooner, but time has been a huge restraint on me lately. I am going to most likely be firing it up saturday nite or sunday morning depending on the weather, I'll let you know how everything goes!

Only thing I ended up getting PCed was the a-arms and I have not gotten them back yet.

With all the other crap that nickel and dimed me to death with the car, wallet, etc. being stolen, I figured I would only do essential parts and then next year after I have a "normal" life again, I will make her purdy........:p

What color did you end up doing for the arms? So did you get any money out of the morons who did it.

It would have been sitting on the ground, but I didn't have the right lock nuts for the balljoints to attach to the spindles for my hosuers,

maybe you can post some pics of your whole build to make up for all the ones I didn't take/post....:blah:

I understand, I think I might get my quad fixed then trade it in for maybe a LTR but I guess will see what happens. It will probably cost me $250 or more to see what happened.

What really steams my apples is nobody ever belives what I say, they always have to get a second opinion from someone better than me. I'm so mad right now I could punch a dam wall!!

Well good news guys!

Cases are in, along with the other "stuff" that I ordered from Honda.

The 43mm Taper Bore carb arrived and it is beautiful.

Now my head just needs to get back to me!

I am going to try to get the majority of the motor back together this weekend, but we will see how the list of honey-do's goes!

Have you used one personally? I have on my 400ex, and for the price it was OK, but always without fail, it would be somewhat locked up right upon startup. With it pulled in and me hitting the starter button it would creep forward. After warmed up it never did this again. I researched it and apparently if there are crummy materials used for the fibers this is common... it was still only like $30 though so it never really bothered me.

No, but I would use one for the amount of $, I would even do it twice cause I have added up the price for OEM clutch fibers and steels and its insane!

ya see,.... it's not a simple few days turnaround to build an engine when case splitting.....

parts have to be ordered, then shipped, then old parts cleaned, then assembled,. and all rely on time for each to get done....

good luck Dave. you can do it!

Yup Chad!

I have an utmost respect for guys that build motors all day! 90% of people have no idea what goes wrong and what it takes to coordinate half of this stuff!

Plus, you have to add into the equation that life still goes on!

Thanks for the vote of confidence Chad! I will be riding/racing soon!

Yah this definatly is not a 2 day turnaround! I thought it would just take a few days...more like 2 months... I was slackin a bit! I blew it up in february and just finished it yesterday...Definatly worth all the trouble though!!! 3 seperate times I had to order parts and you all know how that goes. But WOW what a difference. I went from stock internals to a 11.5:1 wiseco, Hot Rods Crank & Rod and a Hot Cams stage 2....Good Times!
