rear shock set up? need info!?

i want to set my rear shock, i don't like the stock setting. if i tighten the spring preload adjuster, will this give me a better ride for jumping, whoops, etc. i'm not a casual trail rider. what do you guys have your quads set at?

Man you gotta search around and get some info. Do a search here since there have been a bunch of good threads on suspension.

Then as stated in most threads check out the following on the web, axis, Mx-tech.com, LSR etc there are more but I lost my fav's in a HD crash so poke around the net.

If you dont get the info your looking for you will at least find out what info you will need to tell people so they can help you.

i did a search, it helped a bit, however, my rear shock seems a little to soft. i set the rebound damper and compression damper. when i wiggle the grab bar up and down, there is about 4-5 inches of play. do i want this play? i would think this play is no good for jumpe'n a stuff. might be good for trails? what adjusts this?

thx for any help you guys can give.

ps. i don't want to damage the shock, it looks like a lot of money.
