I heard the 450R requires a hell of a lot more maintenance than the 400EX. How much more and is it really a pain in the ***? He said you have to pay alot more attention to the Valves and stuff. Its a 2004 I am looking at buyin with low hours.

The 400EX is definitely a solid machine but the 450R runs very well with just basic maintenance as long as you keep up with it.

The 450's are pretty maintenance intensive...more-so than most other class ATV's IMHO.

Valve adjustments every 40 hours...

Oil changes every 20 hours....

Tranny oil changes every other oil change...

Chain lubing....

Air Filter cleaning....

How come the service manual I downloaded says to Inspect valves at 200 hours?

I realize and like the idea of doing it sooner, but just curious.

I have an '04 and havent had to check the valves yet! Just change the engine/tranny oil regularly (very easy to do especially on the '04). And Clean your air filter and you will be fine.

It's not a pain in the arse at all, in fact, its worth it because I like knowing that my motor has fresh oil running through it

I dont think they are that much different than the 400ex. I dont care if you are riding a Honda rancher, or a 450r, if you want it to last than you need to change the oil and do regular maintenance. If you are riding a 400ex hard than you will want to change the oil in that every 20 hrs or so also, and ANY BIKE will run longer and harder with the valves adjusted properly. Adjusting the valves only takes 15 minutes or so, and its kind of nice to take care of your own bike. Then when you go out on a 10 hour ride you know she's going to bring you back home. Just my opionion.......

Ok thanks. How hard is it to check the valves on it? Any worse than the Ex?
