Okay...I know that I am gonna start a fight here, but I want everyone's opinions from experience. I am looking to buy/build a quad mainly for the dunes. I want something that handles well, has plenty of power, and is comfortable to ride all day. I love my 400ex, but it just isn't cutting it anymore. I am a Honda man, so I am thinking about a 250r or 450r. What setups have you run that you would recommend?

my favorite quad for the dunes, is my predator. i like the flat out power in the dunes, with the neck breaking acceleration, and awesome handling. even with sand sharks, it will still spin them in anything. i dont know what your looking for, i like snad drag racing, and that kind of stuff, but occasionally like to get some air, and with the fox suspension system, you could drop off the face of the earth, and not feel the landing. i know you like honda, so id have to say the next best thing to me, would be a 450r, i love the power they have, not *** good of a handler as say the ltr, but add a hrc kit, and this thing rips. i love all the 450s, but in the sand, the r really shines. its light, and powerful and can be opened up with very few mods. the 250r is historical. the feeling of riding one, is second to none. but i would have to say although its an awesome feeling the day of the 2 strokes are over, and the thumpers will be losing them on the sand very soon. so idk, this is just my opinion, but thats what you asked for. sorry if i wasnt helpful.

I would say a banshee for the dunes but being a Honda man myself. I am 100% sure you would be much happier with a big bore 250R.

Maybe like a 310 or a 330. You will smoke most bashee's in a drag and be able to ride in comfort all day.

And not to mention the reliabilty that Honda offers.

I have a Duncan PV265 that chews up slightly modded banshees.

I am selling mine if you are at all interested.

All powdercoated or chrome.
All top of the line everthing.
Dune and TT ready.

Let me know if you want more info

I love my LTR but I think a 700R might be better. But I've never ridden one for a extended amount of time either.

it depends on what you value...

Well...I want a good suspension, good power, comfortable ride, and good reliability. Now I know that damn near any quad could be built to have all of those things, but I don't want to drop $10K into a quad. I am asking what is a good starting point. First things I will do are add some aftermarket shocks and do some motor work, so which quad would be the best starting point? I am starting really to lean towards a 250r...

Banshee - Dune drags

Raptor - Dune Drags, Trail

DS 650 - Good all around, drags and trails, more of a dersert machine

450s good dune racers jumping ect

Interesting opinions. I live a couple of hours from Glamis and ride pretty much every weekend . Here is my top quads for the sand.

Suzuki 450- Low wide and fast stock. Hard to beat that combo

Yamaha yfz 450 (what I own) Great power hit for the dunes, but to be perfect you need to make it wide. Best motor of the 450's

Honda 450- to tall and narrow for dunes, with mods its a good duner.

Yamaha raptor 700- Good for a bigger guy that wants to ride mellow. Gobs of power but not hard hitting and heavy.

Polaris predator- (my last quad) I rode a pred for two years at glamis. Good engine but the weight and front end hold it back at the dunes

Yamaha banshee- Was the king of the dunes before the new four strokes took over. The king of power, but handles like crap, burns tons of gas.

Honda 400ex. Good duner, handles well but low on power and air cooled rus to hot in the dunes.

DS 650- Cadilac (sp) ride, big power, good suspension, but weighs way to much- a tank.

LTZ 400- Handles good, jumps well, but lacks power.

Or just go to Glamis and see who rips. 90% of the guys I ride with ride a modified yfz 450.

Very good posts and accurate about the banshees as well. Drag setup banshees are definitely the reigning king of speed in the dunes as far as quads go. For overall riding and performance any of the new 450's setup right are awesome in the dunes. IMO the LTR is probably the best setup out of the box because of its 50"width. All it needs is paddles, filter, cherry bomb, pipe and or drilled out exhaust. YFZ is second because it "needs" more work but is right up there with the LTR.

i dont know about all that... yes, i realize that LTR is wider than the other 450s... is that good, yes, but not crucial in the sand... the YFZ handles just finie, and the suspension is great... it soaks up landings like crazy- i have been amazed at some of the landings it has soaked up with me... being used to my 250r, lots of times i will be twisted in the air thinking "oh man im going to eat tis landing" and the yfz will just soak it up...

also, the YFZ is much much faster than the LTR. it doesnt even need the cherry bomb. what does the YFZ "need" in the sand?
paddles, filter, and baffle out...

I HAVE TO GO WITH THE BANSHEE I LIVE 20 MINUTES FROM THE DUNES AND GO RIDING ALMOST EVERY WEEKEND AND HAVE SPENT A FAIR AMOUNT OF TIME ON EVERY BIKE OUT THERE.. ITS ALL ABOUT THE DOWN RIGHT NASTY POWER OF THE BANSHEE. IF ITS BUILT RIGHT THERES NOTHING ELSE EVEN CLOSE. AND IT HAS THE MOST COMFORTABLE SEAT HANDS DOWN. YOU ACTUALLY HAVE TO "RIDE" THE BANSHEE UNLIKE MOST OF THESE NEW 4 STROKES.

in the sand, up the hill, the YFZ is hands down faster than the LTR...

and im not talking "oh i raced one guy"...

i've been to the dunes 10 weekends so far this season, and i do spend a considerable amount of time at the hill racing and watching...

and i've seen enough to rule out that the rider sucked or the bike wasnt tuned it or...

ive dusted several people with number plates with full exhaust, haulers, etc...

im still waiting... as of yet the only suzuki to have ever beaten me up the hill is a quadzilla..

ive been beaten by other yfzs, 450rs, a raptor 700 or 2, and of course modded banshees...

but still not by a LTR...

How does the yfz run compared to your 250r speed wise? I would love to run against your yfz glamis up olds and at the drags, not saying i'd win because i'm riding a slowasaki 400 but it would be good to see where i'm at.

it depends on the hill... the 250r is always at least equal to the YFZ, but is faster on some hills... the YFZ is kinda inbetween gearing... if i geared it differently it may be a different story...

like olds at glamis... on my 250r i could run it in 4th wrapped out... on the yfz, i could pull 4th, but not strong.. it was faster running it in 3rd than in 4th...

same with comp(freeway) at gordons well... patton is the only hill that i race that i can really run 4th, and that depends on the sand that weekend...

my 250r ran strong enough to where if i could get it in the powerband, it would wrap out that gear... i could pull china wall wrapped out in 4th...

so i guess to make a long story short, on some hills they are about equal, and on some the 250r would be slightly faster...

unfortunately i rarely go to glamis... im at gordons well about every other weekend, but usually go to glamis only once or twice per season... i will be at gordons well this weekend, and two weeks after that...

there is a guy in my group that has a set up real similar to yours, only i dont know if his is ported and polished... assuming you are around the same weight and have the same riding ability, and that your bike is tuned in correctly, i would imagine it would be a pretty good race...

i think the best dune quad was my banshee. it was fast, light, and smooth. but i got rid of her. :(
but i then got a yfz. and man was i impressed. so nice and fast being stock. well the banshees are fast adn meant to stay on the ground. but if you like to jump..like me.....then the yfz is perfect. the bigger you go the better it gets. but its whatever you wnat to do. thats just my opinoin. ohh and i have ridden a raptor700,660, 450r's. and mine was still better then all of those.

ohh here is my duner:

I don't care what anyone says ive ridden all of the other 450's and 700's I still think my 450r is the most comfortable and smoothest to ride out there...........and I own a 250r and a 400ex there fun but no were near as snappy and powerful

the best duning quad would be a highly modified 250r. One with suspension, wider arms, and a big bore kit. A 350r (ported by the right person) would blow away almost all of the compitition at the hill or strip and also on the trails. I would also add a powervalve to the 350r and have the smoothest powerband around. it would have as good of low end as the four bangers and still have the arm ripping two stroke power up top. this is just my opinion and what i am working towards building.
