400EX probs??

This spring I plan on buying a used older 400ex. Is their any thing I should look for, frame cracks in specific areas, first year models have any problems etc. Thanks:)

i cant think of any problems, maybe some of the other guys will but i cant think of any right now,

as for cracks look around the foot pegs and check the swing arm, and maybe ask pappy he would know the best he has seen alot of frames other than that just give the bike a basic look over, but most imprtantly ride the bike,

only thing i can think of is front suspension isnt the greatest (use 450r shocks) and no reverse.

there is almost nothing to find on a 400ex that could go wrong. they are incredibly reliable. just look for the obvious stuff, and make sure you ride it to see how it feels

id say check the rear bearings by wiggling the axle. nothin major, just worth lookin at.

Take a look at the oil, on your test ride make sure the clutch isn't slipping, Just like everyone has said check the rear axle bearings. Oh one more thing check for the permagrin you get from riding one of these things. John:D

the only frame issues ive ever heard of on the 400ex involves the subframe. check around all the welds. also, check the front shock mounts, and like others said, around the footpegs.
