I just took my 400 all apart to reset the timing. It runs well now but the Timing chain ticks like crazy, really loud. I dont know why its soo loud now, as opposed to before i had set it. It never used to tick at all. What are the possible concequences from this if i keep riding like this. What are you supposed to do to fix the ticking problem???? New timing Chain? New Cam???

First check the valve clearance. (.004in-.005ex if cam is stock) If that's fine than you may need a cam chain and/or tensioner. The tensioner is easier, but the 400EX is known for stretching the timing chain. Also make sure you didn't leave any bolts, such as the cam sprockets bolts, loose.

I have heard rumors of a 450R cam chain fitting, lasting longer and even being cheaper. Ask around or even make a thread about that before you try it thought please. I am not sure if this is true, or not.

I do know that companies, such as ProFab ATV, offer stronger chains for around the price of stock, if not less.

I was wrong. It is $9 more than stock, being $89 rather than $80.

On this site go to "reviews" where you will then see the heavy duty 400EX timing chain section. Pictures are there along with the review given.

Almost 1/8" thicker!:eek2:

Its actually a 2002 crf450 (dirtbike) cam chain that fits in the 400ex. I have one in mine after snapping my stock one. It runs great. Youre right about it being cheaper, they range from $26-33.

Oh okay. Thanks a lot. Are those prices off eBay, or something of that sort?

Did your chain actually break when the engine was running?:eek2:

I bought mine through C&d for $33 but I think you can buy it from service honda for a little cheaper. And yes my stock one snapped after I landed a small jump (right after I installed a brand new piston actually). Luckily the piston was fine and they valves were not bent at all!

$33 is a great deal. You're lucky you didn't get any bent valves, let alone all 4. :eek2: ;)

I have a 2002 bone stock 400ex as far as the motor goes and I was wondering if i need to worry about my timing chain? I have had it since June 2001 and i ride all the time. It runs perfect but always looking to do preventative maintenance, thanx.

I wouldnt worry about it to much. But if you ever have the clutch basket off go ahead and throw a crf450 chain in their for cheap insurance. Snapping a timing chain is not a common problem. If it starts to stretch it will make noise and you will know it needs replaced.

At the top of the page where you can click "forums", to get here, go 2 over. It will say "reviews." Also, you can use the quote option at the bottom of each message to show what comment is being referred to (such as mine) ;) :D
