Got a 2001 400ex. It is basically stock beside a WB CDI, K&N with outerwears, Custom air box lid & Modified stock exhaust. It has been awhile since I road and now riding it again the jetting is not correct. I have been reading up on some info and have decided to revert back to the oem jets & needle. The last Dj jet I ran was a 170 main needle on 3rd and mixture screw out 3.5 turns and it appeared to run lean according to the plug. I am already running a 42k pilot and that has been working great, but what keihin mains should I be picking up as a base also how many turns of the mixture screw is good to start at. Thanks for any info in advance.

odd im was runing a 38 pilot and a 170 main with the needle on the second clip and i was runing way to rich. i put in a 160 and it has seemed to lean it out nice. im wating for a 42 pilot though because it bogs when u hit the gas hard.

That was the same thing I was thinking. Thought for sure the Dj170 with minor mods would be rich.

Disregard------>Okay I went back to oem jets but left the dynojet needle in, went 2.5 turns out with a 165k main. WOT for 10-15seconds killed pulled the plug and it still is white. Sorry if the pic is crap but this is white. The plug was brand new DPR8Z. Any help or info would be great.<-----Old Data

Apparently my 400 does not like dyno jet's. Current setup now is 155k main, 42k pilot, stock needle on 2nd clip from bottom and 2.5 turns on the fuel mixture. The pic shows my custom mods to the air box lid, the stock exhaust mod and the plug with a pass with the above setup at 3rd gear WOT. If plug pic is hard to see the base ring is mostly black with some brownish going down to just over the first thread, the porcelain is a dull white with no specks or buildup and the ground strap is gray with no build up.

When you do a plug chop, you need to look at the base of the porcelain. Not the top. Technically you need to cut the threads off to see the burn.

Well then I guess I got confused because I was following this Article (http://www.dragstuff.com/techarticles/how-to-read-plugs.html)
