Confidence.. Thats it man.. Doesn't matter how much power you have.
I've climbed this particular hill on a 300ex, 400ex, yfz450 within the past 4 years.

The question leads me to believe he's talking about BIG hills....where power does matter.

IMO, Mid to Top end power, when shooting hills, I rarely use the bottom end of the power

Your only seeing 20% of the hill:D
How big do you want it to be ??

Each person has there own technique climbing hills. Any hill I climb i'm around half throttle.. I'm not one of the guys that hits a hill wide open. I like making it look really smooth and easy as possible.
Throttle and clutch control helps a whole lot.. Body language is also important.. don't want to lean to far forward because you will lose traction...

i cruise up to the base of the hill (about half throttle) and then i floor it. it works every time:D

Bottom end defiantely. On the tight technical hills when you start to bog, bottom end power will get your wheels spinning again.

I would have to agree, just gotta know how to handle the bike and be confident in yourself.

depends on the hill and your style. some hills i simply tractor up in first gear using low end torque. other hills i hit balls to the walls WOT using all top end. some i just cruise up half throttle. but confidence is key. the longer you look at a hill the less likely you will try it. if you don't feel comfortable, don't do it. but once you start, don't second guess yourself and commit. power is needed, but not as important as confidence.

KB I can see that you show the same passion for hill shooting like I do, it doesnt have to be the tallest hill in the woods just as long as its straight up and down. Hill "climbing" is an art form in itself and is completely different from hill "shooting", the harder you make it look the harder its going to be to climb it. Ive seen many of my buddies and other riders mess themselves and there bikes up ridiculously bad. Like KB said alot of it has to do with confidence. If your going to climb a new hill then sit at the base of it and think about it awhile (what gear should I be in? how long of a run? what angle should I hit it at?) Alot of things can factor into hill shooting. Rider posture, throttle control, MOMENTUM, and facy clutch work are all factors that need to be accounted for inorder to have a sucessfull climb. Its not all about power, ive sat at the bases of a few wicked hills for 20+ min, trying to make an intelligent decision on weather I should even attempt it or not, then have my buddy blow by me on his 300ex topped out in 6th gear struggle up it, but make it. Oh yea and when shes rolling down the hill its always better to look away, but what sucks is you can still hear your quad hitting the ground on each roll "$$Cha-ching, cha-ching, cha-ching"

Thats very straight up . but not to high, look how close the other quads are to you.

We do steep hills, they take every bit of of power a 14 tothed 400ex can get to make it up them.

Confidence and momentum are what you need to climb hills.

Hills come in all shapes and sizes. They get much easier after your first bad crash, believe me :)

Here is a sampler pack from years past...

He probably meant 5th... or might have meant 350 Warrior or Banshee...

We all got to get together sometime! And make some new hills! :D
