i have a 330pv motor gettin ported by neil and i just ordered a magura hydraulic clutch sytem. i was thinking of ebc clutch kit. i seen sothin somewhere in the past about cr500 springs being used on some setup? i guess my questions are, what fibers, what springs, what plates?

I have seen somewhere that the cr500 springs are softer than stock 250r springs. now if I could remember what I got in mine...

head on over to rockymountainatv.com and order the TUSK heavy duty clutch kit, you get fibers, steels and heavy springs for like 40 bucks, cant beat it. Also Hinson basket and hub and like said the 89 update. Alot of banshee guys over at the HQ.com are running the tusk HD kits and have nother bad to say about it. Also either ebc or barnett cant remember but alot of people say they are crap.

use OEM steels, ebc clutches and 250r springs. if you race and like arm pump, get 500r springs lol

What makes for the easiest pull? Easy pull lever / soft springs/heavy duty springs or clutch cable?

actually the stock 250R springs with an aftermarket lever such as RTC or asv will work fine. if ya want a little extra spring tension, ya can install lil washers under the pressure plate bolts. works great.

What's the 89 clutch update?

Also, I noticed in one catalog they say this about the Hinson clutch basket: "85-87 you will need to modify the small gear on the crankshaft or change it to a 88-89 gear."

Is that related to the 89 clutch update?

the '89 update kit essentially is all the components that make up the pushrod/pressure plate assembly i/e the pushrod, button, flat bearing, washer and the pressure plate.

the way the hinson basket is made it will interfear with the small crank gear. what ya nee to do is bevel the existing gear.

i wasnt/aint aware that the '89 crank drive gear is beveled from factory?

For reference, this picture and info is from "Blackie" on another board:

Ok, thanks. Is the 89 stuff just more durable?

yes 89 is when they "got it right" lol it makes for a much smoother clutching and shifting.

that's interesting info regarding those springs. thanks for posting.

magic racing baskets are a billet clone of the hinson for a lot less.

then i run barnet HD springs and stock clutch plates.

It's not, the 87-89 gear is thinner. The length of the crank on the clutch side is shorter on an 87-89 also. If you've ever put a long rod crank in an 85-86 motor, you'll notice the difference in the thickness of the gears if you use all of your 85-86 stuff. Where the end of the crank is almost flush with the gear on the short rod crank, the long rod crank end is recessed in the gear about 1/4 inch.

One of my race quads has the update and one doesn't. Personally I can't feel one bit of difference.

I got a hinson basket, 1988 CR500R plates and springs. I use a PEP lever to adjust the pull, its not too bad.

and the 89 clutch update

:blah:

According to all the big hp 250R guys on PS the Cr500 springs are not as stiff. Of course that is compressed. It also may depend on year.
