Man this is the 250r forum so i am willing to bet that all your responses will be bias. But for mine i would say if you are racing a with a limited budget on your matineince go with the 400ex. so you can keep it in top working order. Keeping a 250r running at its best comp. would require a rebuild quite frequently but if you are just racing for the heck of it and want a good, fun and not to mention dazzling four wheeler get a 250r. :D
just my .02

250r4life: lighten up he is just trying to get some info. That is the main purpose of this site so if you arn't gonna help him just give the post a bump and move along.

i think you'll be happy with a 250R. a 2 stroke doesnt require the maintainance that people think. you have the usual stuff to keep a check on as you would any other quad. as for the engine, i feel there is less. far less moving parts.

once you have a fresh engine thats built right. she'll stay with you for many hours to come. a key thing to remeber as with any engine is to keep the tranny oil fresh, the air filter clean and every so often check compression and above all! once in awhile do a leak down test for air leaks.

before you get into the 2 stroke scene, do your home work and ask questions. there is alot of info here to be had. get to know your quad and its sound. this may sound crazy but, she'll tell you when somethings wrong.

good luck with your venture into the 250R world.

i would go with a 250r for racing...400ex s are a little more of a trail quad.

i didnt mean it in a harsh way... thats what i dont like about typing- too hard to understand the tone and spirit in which the message was sent..

between this being a 250r section, the fact that the 250r is superior to the 400ex, and that i think he kinda already knew that- i was just trying to elicit what he already knew...

I think we're all with you there bud.

And unless you have a reallly BUILT Motor, you won't have to rebuild the top end all the time, or much at all.

Kickbacks a B!t(h! LoL

And get ready to get your arms ripped off.

Cool i gotcha. And yes just to drive your point in even further the 250r is the superior quad. Like csr250r the 400's more of a trail quad.

I have both. I feel this is more of a personal preference issue. I like the low end of my EX but also love the hit and top end of my 250r. I find the EX more forgiving if you get into a corner in too high of a gear. The EX is probably easier to ride. But with an experienced rider, the R is quicker around the track. So, I think some of this depends on the riders' skill. In other words, a less experienced rider will probably be faster on the EX, while a more experienced rider will probably be faster on the R.

Personally, I can't seem to commit to one or the other. That's why I have both. :D

get a new 450...I mean isnt that what everyone is doing. Must be the way to go if they are filling up the wagon that fast. Personally if I were you, Id sink some money into the 400 and race it, just to get your feet wet and seeing as how you already own it, youll be more comfortable on it. I mean no use jumping on your first R and trying to learn how to race, how to ride a two stroke, and how to man handle the R all at the same time. Its the rider that stands on the podium, not the bike. A good rider on a slow bike will always beat a poor rider on a fast bike. (in MX. with drag racing...anyone can press the go button)

well i adapt to quads pretty easy, as long as it got 4 wheeles i can ride it!!!so im not worried about not being able to ride it! i have rode a 250r, 450s! 450s are ok but im not impressed with them much! i have rode a 250r and love it!!! so thats prolly what im going to get!!!

I'm just curious, what don't you like about the 450's? I have 3 250R's and a 450R and the 450's will rev quicker than any other production quad out there. Nothing will handle like the 250R though. My 450 feels top heavy compared to my 250r's even with roll design a-arms and elka shocks.

I don't like the new quads, due to that they are top heavy and when stock way too tall. I have a 450, but its a hybrid in a aftermarket 250r frame, it has the best of the 250r and the 4 stroke in one.

250r or a 250r framed hybrid with a crf 450 motor would be the best way to go.

If you are doing more racing than riding, then go with the 250r. But, if you are doing more trails, then go with the 400ex. They are one of the best trail quads made. But, then again it would also be nice to had a piece of atv history.
