What would be the best sprocket size to put on my 01' 400EX, I mainly ride trails - woods, GNCC stuff. I am going to start racing some races this year in the Mid East Hare Scramble and was just seeing what would be the best number of teeth to go with on the front and rear. Im running 20" tires. I have been told to just go with a (14/38) which is stock rear and 1 tooth down on the front. Also been told to go with (13/39) and (14/40) I just dont know what to go with I think the the (14/38) would be my best bet b/c I want alittle more bottom end but still want my top end speed. What do you all think or run???

Hi I have a stock 07 400ex and run 14/38,awesome bottom end and top speed of 102kph.

I did try 15/38 which gave it a bit longer legs overall, but not as much bottom end.

Also tried 16/38 lousy bottom end but 120kph top end.

After trying all these combos went back to 14/38 ,really don.t need anymore than a 100kph for what I do(flat track, trails).

Hope this helps

I'm goin 13/38. Low end is the name of the game. I ride my crotch rocket when I want top end speed and power.

i have 15/39 and i like it alot better than 14/38. with the 14 it feels like the gears are shorter and felt like i lost too much top end. the only time i like the 14 on is for hill climbing

ride_red666 - how much bottom end did you lose with a 15/39 over stock???

IMO--The stock gearing works great with a stock or lightly modded machine. I plan on gearing up shortly. Probably will end up with 15/37 or 15/36. The stroker combined with stock gearing makes for an insane amount of low end.
