a long island rider was killed today after he lost control and hit a telephone pole riding in the ice/snow storm. the road conditions were real bad for riding, im a die hard snow rider and i decided it wasnt good enough to be out....barely any snow at all and all ice. i dont know good details but it looked like a blue banshee and the rider had a helmet on.....VERY sad because it was our first storm of the winter and everyone was very anxious to get out in it.....riding in the snow is like a long island tradition. may this rider rest in peace and i pray for the family and freinds.....i might have even ridden with whoever it was. sucks even worse because long island is having a MAJOR war over atvs's and we are trying very hard to get a legal riding area.

Sloppy conditions also likely contributed to the death of a Middle Island teen who lost control of his ATV on Wednesday afternoon, Suffolk County police said.

Lance Lorenz, 16, who was riding the vehicle illegally on Westfield Road, slammed into a utility pole after hitting a puddle at about 1:36 p.m.

He was taken to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital where he died at 2:40 p.m., police said.

i will continue to ride the streets during snow storms.....the thing is, today at 1:36pm it had just stopped pouring rain and sleet....horrible riding conditions especially if he was moving at a good clip, no snow on the roads at all. still so sad though, 16 years old cut short.:(

hmm.. this really makes me wonder why states are cracking down on people riding atv's... i dont go on the roads because i do not want to piss of my township any more than they are already... cars and trucks are for the raods... quads are for the dirt. period.

i've ridden past numerous cops when riding snow covered streets. 95% of them wave and drive by. we try to obey most of the traffic laws and keep from being too wreckless. if you drove past the local applebees or tgi fridays at 10pm during a blizzard, the front would be packed with sleds and quads. i know at least 5-10 cops from my town that ride sleds when it snows.

check it out: main street in my town last year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8s14wzXuOM

yea the cops just wave to use too. I stop at the stop signs if there are cars in site, but my friends always blow through them. No problem, i always catch righ tback up. It seems like people ride if there is just 2" on the ground. I wait until at least 6" and i just take my swing arm skid off.

It is completely different around this area; street riding is stirctly enforced and cops will do their best to chase down whoever is riding on the roads. I have spent way too much money on my quad to get it impounded.

when i say we on are the streets, this is strictly during big snow storms. like you said, street riding, actually, quad riding in general is HIGHLY enforced in my area too....impound on first offense no questions asked.

What town do you live in.. We were riding down rt. 112 in coram last winter during one of the big snow storms, a cop was coming the opposite way, he attempted to cut us off by coming in our lane, we went around him and he busted a u turn and tried to chase us. I dont know what he was thinking, there is no way he was gonna catch us in the snow. Cops suck around here.

Moral of the story- Don't ride on the road, and don't ride in the ice.
