I finally lost me second key.. the worst thing about it is that I just got a blank key from honda last week but didn't get it cut yet.

Anyway, now I need help. I called honda for a new switch assembly/keys but it wont be in for about 2 weeks.

How can I get this thing started?? If you can help me maybe you should PM instead of posting it here :D

I don't know without looking at the switch harness, but I think there are 4 wires. I'll check it out tonight and let you know if I can figure it out.

yeah, if you're going to trash the old one, crack it open and take a look at how the wires get connected when you turn the key and you'll see how to hotwire it. i can't imagine it's all that complicated...

my switch went bad shortly after i got my bike and they took the switch out to order me one and they wired 2 of the wires that are the same color together and put a male and female connector on the other too. all you had to do was hook those together and you had power. just dont forget to unplug it when your not riding it. its real easy. i couldve done it but they hadf to take the switch out anyway.

Thanks all..

I'd hate to jam the screw driver in there in case I do find one of my keys. I'll play around with it tonight or tomorrow, it can't be that hard to figure out, I mean there's only 4 wires right?!

If I find my key then i'll have 2 ignitions, 1 for each set of plastics.. It will be that much faster to switch them :D

Take the red and the black wire and cut them and put a toggle switch in and the 400 will run and you have a switch. This is what I had to do after I got it back from the police after it was stolen and I had no key. The black/white don't worry about it. I order a switch from service honda for $32 to my door. Or take it to a locksmith and he will cut that spare key and then have him make an extra.

take the switch or the number off the switch too a honda dealer, most have a book with all #'s in it and they can cut you a new key, i have had several made over the years.

i can hotwire any 300ex in about 15 to 20 seconds. Im not sure if it is the same for the 400ex. The plastic piece just pops off with the ignition switch and two wires need to be taken out (they fit in a lil rubber connector , no cutting) Just stick these two together and presto.....you can start the quad. I have been running my 300ex like this for almost a year now and i find it very easy to do. I just dont feel like buying a new switch; plus, it is just as easy as using a key.

STOP!!!!! I went to my honda shop, they read the side of the switch and made me a key that fit perfect just by the code on the switch.

Exactly, come on guys you should know this,,,if you lost your key dont buy a new switch,,their is a key code on the ignition switch (Example C27) and all you have to do is give your dealer that code and they will make you a key in a few seconds!!!

I called my local honda dealership and they said they couldn't make me another key based on the number that is on my ignition!? Maybe they really can't but the partsman there really doesn't know too much.

Anyway, the ignition still didn't come in, it's on back order for another week (like usual when I order from them). It will cost me 40$ Canadian and I'll have 2 keys with it so it's not too bad.

I figured out how to get it started without having to splice any cables on the bike. I unplugged the switch then ran a wire from the red wire prong to the black wire prong.

or you could just push it over a hill and throw out the clutch.

Still wouldn't start without connecting those wires

There should be two wires going into the ignition switch, detatch both of them, then take the two wires that you detactched from the key switch wires and connect them together - then start it up , heres a pic -

Well its the same thing, just follow the two wires that come out of the key switch, you could cut them and put those connectors on there so you have them.
