It depends and only you can answer. I was in the same boat but I already had the wider arms, axle and shocks but stock engine. My engine was needing a freshing up so I made an offer on a leftover 05 model 450R and they wouldn't take it so I decided to spend the money on the EX (of which she needed a little engine work anyway)

I'm glad I kept my EX.

I don't need the higher HP of the 450's and my riding areas suit me fine. Maybe if more of my mods would've swapped I might have raised my offer but I would've had to purchase new arms, axle, rear shock and I didn't care to spend that much.

For about $700 I have an engine that runs right with a YFZ (I raced my first one this weekend) for about 100 yards (only room we had)

Good luck in your decision and I guess the main thing is are you willing to part with the money?

It all depends on what you want.

Where you'll be riding.

If you need to finance the 450R vs. pay cash for the EX upgrades.

If you have the money, and want to spend it, go with the 450r. Also what type of riding do you do?

just depends on riding style.
sand dunes=450
drag racing=450
trails=400
nice easy goin wheelies=400

the power of the 450 is violent compared to the 400. my buddy has a 06 450 and i would take my ex over it any day. reliability of 400 is much better. then again water cooled. yah know its all prefferance. i personaly like my ex its funner to ride. why not upgrade to an 05 ex or newer so u got reverse. i will never give that up. good luck in ur decision. nothin beats bringin a new bike home to drool over though.:cool:

I really want the 450 too, but everything is telling me no. Did you ask the same question in the 450 section. To my suprise some of them regret leaving their 400s, not very many. Major factor for me is reliability. They say with those high reving engines, comes rebuilds. I guess the power cost money. Maybe its just all hearsay. Some say they have had no problems.

i am much more comfortable on my 400ex than i am on my 450. the r is too high strung for the trails i ride. i keep spending $$$ to make it cloaser to the 400 that sits besdide it...
