Yea its pretty tough stuff. They have chrome paint. Im thinking about trying it for my 400. Maybe go with the red. Take a look at it here http://www.por15.com/Color%20Chrome.html. I think under the faq for some of the paints it says compares it to powdercoating in some way..but dont quote me on that I just skimmed over the faq. Ca'mon!:huh

Q. How does COLORCHROME compare with powder coating ?
A. COLORCHROME is much easier to use and the colors are much more brilliant and dramatic because they're transparent, allowing the brilliance of the chrome or polished metal to shine through! Powder coating is an electroplating process that involves oven baking and noxious fumes. COLORCHROME's colors are not only deeper and more vibrant, but cost much less than powder coating as well.:square

POR-15® is sensitive to UV light (sun) and must be topcoated for prolonged exposure to sunlight

Anyone else notice that? For those that have used the product before, what happens when it is exposed to sunlight for a prolonged period of time? Seems pretty cool, but I think i'd rather powdercoat for economic, and variety reasons.

They make a topcoat that you put on when your done with the colorchrome. Go to the site and go to the FAQ it explains it there. Besides is your frame gonna be in the sun all day? The plastics cover most of the frame.Beerock you dont have to polish the frame before. It would prob make it look even crazier but in the book raoul has it says it can be painted right over silver paint. ca'mon!

so how much of this do you really need to do a whole frame, swingarm and a-arms, and it sounded like you dont have to strip the original paint,, so it sounds alot easier than taking it to get powder coated and cost less. This sounds like a good idea too me, why would it matter if its permanent if it doesnt chip?:square

12-15-2002, 11:16 PM
32 bucks a court. A court if brushed....can do like 3 or 4 frames with 2 coats of brushing each.

To put in spray cans...it takes 5oz each. Takes one can to coat frame once. Brush goes on much thicker....and settles beautifully. :macho

I will post pics of my white por15 frame tomorrow.. Also has anyone talked to any of por15's reps? They say do not strip your frame all the way down.. He said to just go over top of the old.. granted you have to take off any loose stuff. If your frame is bare metal as mine was, you have to use the metal prep( it comes in a bottle with a spray nozzle) just spray it on let it sit and rinse with water. Then if it is bare metal you MUST use regular por15 first.. before top coating it. It you are going to use one of there top coats, you have to let the por15 set up just before it glosses over, if it glosses over then you have to use 660grit paper and wet sand it to remove the glossy. I talked to a guy today that totally stripped his parts down to metal DIDNT first coat it with por15 and went ahead and used the por15 topcoat.. He said it started flaking off while putting it into the truck.. They say the nastier the metal the better this stuff works..

i spoke with thier rep today and yesterday. he basically said to follow the directions exactly. if they arent followed it will not work. kinda like almost every other process out there:p

this process will allow a normal fella with a garage and some time to apply a very durable coating on thier frame without the expense and hassle of shipping etc.

i will be very glad to see this stuff in action.

JUST SO EVERYONE KNOWS BECAUSE THERE SEEMS TO BE A LITTLE CONFUSION.IF YOU WANT RUST PROTECTION YOU MUST STRIP THE FRAME OF ALL PAINT BEFORE APPLYING POR-15.IF YOU ARE JUST LOOKING FOR A NICE GLOSS BLACK TOP COAT YOU CAN APPLY POR-15 OVER OTHER PAINTS BUT YOU WILL NOT HAVE RUST PROTECTION . ALSO IF THEPAINT UNDER THE POR-15 EVER PEELS OR BECOMES DETATCHED FROM THE FRAME THE POR-15 WILL COME OFF WITH IT.

AS FAR AS COLOR CHROME GOES ITS BASICALLY A TINT THAT ALLOWS THE SHINE OF THE METAL UNDER TO COME THROUGH.WE ARE ALSO EXPERIMENTING WITH RC CAR BODIES BACKED WITH SILVER METALLIC PAINT AND HAVING GREAT RESULTS. CANDY COLORS. WE HAVE HEARD OF SOME PEOPLE PAINTING SILVER METALLIC FIRST ON RIMS AND PAINTING COLOR CHROME OVER THE TOP WITH GOOD RESULTS.COLOR CHROME ITSELF IS OUT ABOUT 6 MONTHS SO I AM SURE WE WILL FIND OR YOU MAY FIND OTHER WAYS TO USE THE PRODUCT.

When I did my frame with the white. I already had it stripped down to the metal. I first used the metal prep, and rinsed it off. Then put a good coat of por15 silver on it.. I didnt have time to whitecoat it right after so I had to let it sit overnight.. Then wet sanded it to take off any glaze on the silver.. Wiped it down again, then put 3 decent coats of the white with a brush.. The only thing I dont like about the brush (even more so with the white) is its hard to get all the runs before they start setting up.. With the black you probably dont even see them.. Doesnt matter how good your are with the brush you gonna get em.. But so far, the product is great.. I cant believe that it doesnt leave any brush marks.. Even in tight spots where you have to dab the brush it still flows out..

If Kenny is half as good with this stuff as he is with the powder, the people that is sending him stuff will be very pleased:)
(if that doesnt sound right it's a compliment)

12-18-2002, 07:04 AM
Kenny. The best thing and fastest to take off old paint was a 4" angle grinder with wire wheels.. Zips it right off.

Step 1. Since my frame was already stripped down, I had to use metal prep to etch the metal to give it something to bite too.

Step2. For proper rust protection and the rep said the white works best with either silver or black underneath. When you put the regular por15 on you can topcoat it pretty quick, you have to give it a finger touch, if it slighty drags with your finger you are good to go.. I had to let mine sit overnight so I had to wet sand it to take the glossy off it.. Sands really easy..

Step3. Then I just put 3 decent wet coats on it. I didnt let it completely dry..It will air dry to the touch in about 30 minutes, but you need to wait about 2 hours in between coats..

From what I have been told, its better to get all the paint off, but this stuff likes rust.. Dont know how true this is but the rep said he did alot of his own stuff and he said the nastier the metal the better barring paint of course.. Also the owner of the distributor that I bought my stuff from said make sure you metal prep it.. He said he had all his parts stripped to bare metal coated it and the stuff flaked right off. He didnt etch the metal..\

Tants the metal prep is a spray you put on let it sit and rinse it off.. Hope this helps..
