View Full Version : Gas on vs. Reserve

I have a small problem that is probably pretty simple but can't figure it out myself. When first starting my 400ex I turn the gas to on. With choke up it starts and runs. Then as it warms up I put the choke down. It starts to die then I give it some gas and it blubbers and chokes and then dies. I put it on reserve and do the same thing and it runs perfect? I can't figure it out. I have a T-4 pipe, my main jet is a 160, no airbox lid, and a K&N filter. I plan to put a 40 pilot jet in..just haven't had time. Can someone help....

Put the pilet jet in and your problem will stop. But, make it a 42 or a 45. Don't know why it happens though, maybe needs more fuel and the larger pilet helps out.

your 400ex is to fat right now..tht is the prob..reserv jsut doesnt give it as much gas so u can get back and fill up..thats y people say dont ride on reserv if u can.....just jet it leaner and yoour prblem will be solved...u might need to adjust the idle to

the only thing reserve does is take gas in from lower in the tank. it DOES NOT restrict the flow. maybe your petcock is clogged on the normal setting. pull it from the tank to make sure there is no debree on it. the screen could be clogged slighty.

if it restricted the flow what would happen if you had to climb a big hill on the way back to the trail. if they restricted the flow you would run out of fuel in the carb float bowl and get stuck on the hill crash and die.

it just takes gass from lower in the tank

take the petcock loose from the bottom of the fuel tank, clean the white tube that runs from the top of it. sounds like a restriction in fuel flow

Thanks guys, I'll look at that and see if it is clogged or restricted......I definitely don't want to take a tumble, fall on my head and die!
