Is clear coat needed when painting frame? I had some clear coat but I found out it was the wrong stuff. I used pj1 primer and paint. Should I get some clear coat too? If so what kind?

Those of you that have painted your frames, did you use clear coat?

Thanks

If you havent already painted it use a 2 part epoxy paint it addhears to the frame and the clearcoat is already in the paint.

Ok, what happened is I bought clear coat but it is lacquer clear coat. It said on the back not to use with no lacquer frame paints. I just called pj1, and they said I have to use epoxy clear coat.

Do you think I should just get some at the local hardware store? Or should I buy it from pj1?

What should I do? Let me know I would like to get the clear on today, if possible.

Hey, if you didnt find out about the clear coat yet, id go to a local auto body shop and ask those guys. Im sure they be more then happy to tell you. And probably pj1 is telling you to buy their paint cause its money in in their pocket... good luck..

heres an idea ive had good luck with if you have access or know someone that works at a body shop ive found that emron paint its used mostly on boats and industrial type equipment will actually last better than powdercoat and is much less expensive but its hard to get in most parts of the country because of epa crap unless your certified to spray it. just an idea.

I used an enamel clear, then a lacquer clear, then a duplicolor high performance wheel coating clear over my paint. Looks great...I'm hoping it holds up half as good as the paint job came out.:D

you can just use clear for the auto part store, but your suposed to clear about 15 min after you paint while its still tacky so the clear adhears to the paint rite. especialy if your useing automotive paints

IMO, for the time someone is to spend on tearing down a frame, powdercoat is well worth the wait, and money!
$0.02

You can use any Epoxy clear, you don't need to use PJ1's

And I have sprayed Imron before. That stuff is awsome, Bulletproof.

I ended up getting the pj1 epoxy clear. Cause I couldn't find any epoxy clear around town.

That imron paint sounds awesome.

When I was younger we sprayed a car in Imron and let it sit for 2 years under a maple tree, when we washed it it looked like brand new. The new Imron is not as good as the Pre-EPA whinning fit stuff but I would put it up against powder coat and epoxy any day.

This is imron blue metallic with blue pearl in it. And the clear I used is called Graphiti Clear. Nothing is supposed to stick on it. It works really good. Its the same clear coat that they use in cement mixing trucks!
