Depending on where it's coming out of, heat is the best tool. Heat the casing and the bearing will fall right out. Don't forget to pop your new bearings in the freezer for a few hours.;)

I use an old generic 1/2 rachet and a 3lb mall

Put it in the oven at aroun 250-300. Find a socket that fits on top of the bearing. Put a work towel around the socket and give it a few taps with a mallet.

I just did the axle bearings on my 400ex.

Once you have the carrier removed from the swing arm, pry the seals out. Then heat the carrier up till its almost to hot to hold. Tap it on a block of wood till the sleeve inside drives the bearings out. It worked great for me and no damage to the carrier. The key is the heat. I just held it in front of the turbo heater in the garage for 2-3 min.

i used a propan torch and went along the outside with it. it was quickest and easiet but the secret is to do it uniform around and not get too close or the aluminum will warp

when I had my 400ex, I would put the new bearings in the freezer for a few hrs, then put th e carrier on a coleman portable gas stove for about 4-5 minutes, then with welding gloves, I used my rachet and a mall to knock the bearings out, but they pretty much just fall out. then quickly clean out the inside of the carrier, and tap the new bearings in, using a socket or piece of wood that fits around the outside diameter of the bearing, let them cool and install the seals.

easy way to get bearings/bushings out... it may take a little more grease for the axle bearings but it will still work as long as you cover up one side. take off the seals then fill the carrier with grease(or whatever you need to get the bearings/bushings out for the particular situation) then take a punch or a bolt or anything that will completely fill the hole on the bearing/bushing and tap it through with a hammer. as soon as it goes in a ways, take out the bolt/punch/whatever you used and add more grease, insert the bolt/punch/whatever you used into the hole and continue to tap it with a hammer. do this untill the bearing/bushing is all the way out. basically its a hydraulic press from the inside. works all the time for me.
