i came across an auction for an oil cooler similar to the 400ex's and was wondering if any one had used them or knew if they were worth the time and effort to install.

thanks

yea i was thinking of something like this because my oil breaks down 2 fast and my engine gets 2 hot 2 fast and im getting ready 2 put some more on their so it would make it harder so does this also help in performance

here's the cooler i bought:

Go to Summit Racing and search for part number PRM-1007. It's $41.95 and with shipping it was just about $50. They also have PRM-1009 (same cooler, no hardware) and PRM-1008 (same cooler, says for ATV's??, $25 more). I ended up buying new smaller diameter hoses since I didn't like the way they fit on the stock oil tubes. I think 4 feet was less than $5.

Make a single cut on your stock oil tube line about 2-3 inches to the left of where it mounts to the valve cover. Just find a nice straight-ish area to cut. I used a rotary tool, then deburred the fresh cut. If you ever wanted to remove the cooler, a short section of hose and 2 pipe clamps will put it back to stock.

Mount the lower section of the original tube.

Mount the upper section of the orginal tube, but point the newly cut end towards the front of the bike (where the new cooler is going to be mounted)

The new cooler comes with foam tape, install this on the frame tubes that run from where the front bumper mounts to the upper front shock mounts. I just used tie wraps to hold the new cooler to the frame (4 total, 2 top, 2 bottom)

I should add that the cooler fins are very easy to mash, so be careful handling it. I made a protective screen for the front of it (yes, it's an 8 inch speaker grille :D)

Route the 2 hoses up and back to the cut oil lines on the motor. Make sure to keep them away from the exhaust! I tie wrapped everything to keep it in place.

You can get them from any autoparts store. Most all tranny/oil coolers should come with hoses anyway. ;) They're jstu fiber reinforced rubber hoses you'd get at the auto parts store. Nothing fancy.

How much oil did you have to add in order to fill up the oil cooler?

Does the oil cooler stay full of oil or does it drain back when the engine is not running?

i don't recall the amount exactly...what I did is attached the hoses to the cooler, then filled it up with water...poured the water into a measuring cup to determine the total volume...it was something like 8 ounces...then just added that much oil to the crankcase.

no, considering the cooler is downhill...the cooler remains full, as does part of the hoses, the other half of the hoses drains back into the motor
