Well i finnaly got time to fix my 400, it would run like poo, so i narrowed it down to the carb, found the float was messed up, so i got a 2002 400ex carb, off a running 400, i also got a new plug and new battery and it still wont start, im getting spark and fuel, i got compression just wont start

I have no idea any ideas?

What are the mods done to your quad and what jetting do you have.

the mods i have done are only a pipe and k&n air filter,
I have 165 main jet 42 pilot ran good, then my float got all messed up so i got a carb off a guy who ran a lrd exhuast with a 165 and 42 pilot jet so im good on the carb

It turns over fast, just wont start
Im going to try jump starting it to see if the battery is not turning the motor over fast enough to build compression

Is it timed correctly?

Just a thought, have you doublechecked the valves clearance? The first time I went into a 4 stroke, I couldn't get it to start and it turned out my valves were too tight. Been a little more careful since then in adjusting them.

I'm sure it's probably not your problem but your symptoms mirror mine (the starting problem, not the previous sputtering)

Also, could be the new carb is messed up too.

Mine won't start in the cold. So what I do is turn on the ready heater and heat up my garage for about an hour and then she starts up and I have no problems. Before I got the ready heater I would tent the quad in old sheets and stick an eletric heater underneath there. But that took alot longer. Just make sure you don't burn down the garage. Might be worth a shot before you start tearing into her.

Just an opinion on the cold start: I went out last Sunday. I keep my 400 covered in my drive-way and it was no more than 32 degrees out and it started just fine.

Check your grounds.

It kinda sounds like a bad ground. Was it ever PC'ed. If so that could be the problem.:D

I got it to run today, its spinning over just fine, normal but i got it running and i let it warm up for about 5 mins, took it for a ride and it started cutting out so i had no gas ( forgot to put more in the tank) after draining it... I put new gas in and tried starting it with new plug would not start i even made sure there was fuel in the carb just would not start it was getting to cold to keep trying

IM going to try the heater idea, i just think its way to cold to be trying to start it
