My buddy has an 86 250r and has been running 80:1 in the summer and just switched to 40:1 this winter. It sounds kinda lean to me. He is running Klotz. I'm not very familiar with the 2 strokes what do you guys run. and do you change it with temp changes from say 15 deg. to 80 deg.

that is kinda lean, actaully very lean. As people will tell you, 20:1 is the most relaible mixture, but will foul plugs like crazy, 32:1 is a good comprimise, 50:1 is the best power/reliablity mixture, over a 50:1 mixture, you are getting alot of power(considering you jet right), but top end life is gonna be very short.

I mix at 32:1, I know I can get more power at 40:1 or 50:1, I don't race or anything, nor do I enjoy rebuilding my motor, so 32:1 is for me. I have top ends last forever using that. I used to use klotz r4, but now I used klotz tws? snowmobile mix, the powervalves stay cleaner and less carbon on the top of the piston. With r4, I had a clogged pv(I have pv cylinders on mine).

wow Ive never heard of anyone running that high of a ratio. I run 40:1 with Maxima castor 927.

What oil is he running? I know Amsoil makes an oil thats 100:1. But I would never trust that. In my oppinion running Amsoil dominator 50:1 oil, but actualy run at 40:1 is the best.

i have never had any problems usng 50:1 with motul oil. I have used this ratio in all 4 of the 250R;s I had, and they all liked it! :D

I've seen multiple sources with dyno results that prove exactly the opposite. More oil equals more power.

Some people say better ring seal, some say the burning oil contributes to the power. The actual reason is up for debate, but the basic premise has been proven over and over. Some have tested even as rich as 8:1.

The obvious drawback is fouled plugs. You almost can't reliably run more oil than 16:1, just because you'll foul too often.

Me personally, I run 40:1, but that is mostly due to convenience. Standard gas cans are 5 gallons, and standard oil bottles are 16 ounces, which is a perfect 40:1 mix, no measuring, no mess, no hassle.

I should have rephrased it, yes, 20:1 makes the most power and reliabitly, but fouls plugs the most often. 32:1 and 40:1 foul plugs also(not nearly as often), that is why I put 50:1 to be as as I stated. Compomise to fouling plugs to power. 40:1 and 50:1 are the easiest to mix, I have seen bottles that come in 160z and 13.? oz. 16oz to 5 gallon is 40:1 and 13.? to 5 gallon is 50:1. It is almost idiot proof to mix your oil/gas that way.
