I use degreaser from Walmart. I is about $5.00 a gallon and I just spray a little on the airfilter and then put some hot water in a bucket and wash it in there, it comes clean.

Try some tide.Fill a bucket with hot water and use your hands to "ring" it out like a sponge.

If you use gas your filters are going to fall apart... it eats the glue. I've seen it happen first hand.

i used gas on my 250ex once every two weeks for a year and it NEVER coroded (sp) or anything. now i use it on our recon, prarie, and my cr125. i put about two inches of gas in a bucket, soak it, squeeze it, but do not ring/tear, then i let it sit out in the sun or use compressed air. if i use water/soap, the stains are still there.

Don't listen to anyone.

Fill a can with KEROSENE, come back 5 minutes later, it will be at least as clean as new.

Easy and works great every time.

Find one of tHose Joe Weider Fitness Food thingie Bottles . The 2kg One .*(you know em man - the short fat bottle with the frisbee size Lid , with a guy selling you powders you forget to mix and drink , and it goes old in the bottle )
Throw out the contents - its no use on a quad anyway .

Your filter will go in there (a UNI just fits nicely ) . Throw in Hot water , and degreaser . Shake it for 10 seconds . The Lid will try blow itself off due to the hot water . DONT let it come off !

remove the Filter .

Your done . Oil and ride .
I dont like mess , I dont like struggling . This is the quickest darn way I've cleaned ANYthing for the Bike .

Use paint thinner. It works great for my stock filter.

dawn, "it gets the grease out"

do it in the kitchen sink dont have to worry about a big mess or having gas/kerosene smell all over. dont take much either

then I use the k&n spray oil.
(I run k&n on the 450r but I use the dawn on all the foam filters on my kids rides)

I have always used gas and I have never seen any weakened joints where the glue was eaten away. And gas cuts through that air filter oil better than anything else. That's what I'd reccommend.

Gas will kill your filter. I have lost filters to it.
For those of that think it won't do anything, just give it time, it will.

Diesel and kerosene both work good, I used diesel for a long time. But it stank horrible and I'm sure it wasn't good to be breathing that in all the time. Plus it took forever to dry out.
So I switched to the PJ1 foam filter cleaner, its exspensive as hell, and 1 can doesn't last long at all but it works super good, and there is no clean up or chemicals to get rid of.

I tired dish soap once, I dunno how u guys use that stuff. It did NOTHING to my filter, I think it made it stickier. lol

Forget everything else that has been posted here. The best filter cleaner, bar none, is Oxy Clean! Who wants to use gas, kerosene, etc., when you can use Oxy and clean your filters in your sink! It's bio degradeable and it's cheap too. Just use real hot water, dump a scoop of Oxy in the sink, slosh it around and then clean your filters, they come out looking better than new! Plus the wife isn't yelling at you for the smell!

I run big filters on my diesel and now on my quad. This is taken from the Glacier diesel site. I do this and it works awesome for the K&N style filters.

There's really nothing special in my cleaning process. I bought a second filter to allow me the time between changes for proper service. That's the key.

Here's what I do. For cleaning I put 1/2 gallon of simple green in a 5 gallon bucket and fill it the rest of the way with straight hot water from the tap. Put the filter in cone down and slap the lid on it for about an hour. The dirt will settle to the bottom and the oil will rise to the top. Pull the lid and drain off the oil on top. This way when you pull the filter up out of the water the dirty oil won't flow back into the filter. Stand the filter up on the cone end and let it drain and dry for a day or two. I don't blow them out or use heat to dry them.

Here's the trick. After the filter is dry I over oil the hell out of it. I even go back over it the next day to make sure I didn't miss and small areas on the ends. Then I put it in a plastic bag with the small cone end down and place it back in the box. Throw it on the shelf and forget about it until you need it. When you come back for it in a month or two you'll notice that the excess oil has drained out into the plastic bags and the filter saturation will be dead even all across the filter and it will look brand new. This will give you perfect coverage and the exact same oiling every time.

Nothing to it.
