Hey I found the picture below, and was wondering if anyone had any input about mounting the battery in the stock air box. Is there anything wrong with doing this? Do yo have to leave the top of the air box off so the battery can vent? Does the air filter breath good enough with the battery in there with it?

Thanks

Got any of the inside of the airbox without the battery in it? Did you just cut that one corner off? Or how did you reseal it so its not a hole?

Thanks

Thanks for all of the info. Do you think the extra weight in the air box will cause any problems like the air box cracking? Do you know anyone else who has done this? I am going out of town tomorrow, but when I get back I may just go ahead and do that. I will be waiting for it to get above 70 before I can paint the frame anyway, so I can kill some time working on this.

I wish I had the tools, ect to make a custom stainless steel air box. I saw one on here and it was so nice.

Aluminum is the way to go its real light. Less weight the better and i thought $95 was cheap.

The only tools i used to install this where screwdriver and a cresent wrench. oh and i modded the front with a hacksaw to get the wire harness in but the hole is very small. Good Luck.

Yes, I like aluminum too, but I have heard that some of the aluminum ones w/ batteries in them the bottoms break out of on hard landings, nothing a couple extra welds probably couldn't fix. Maybe I will look into one on ebay. But I'll probably try my stock one w/ battery like pictured in this thread. I have just spent so much on my bike already, and if the stock one can hold up, I'll just use it. But your aluminum one is real nice.

When I mentioned tools, I was talking about building an air box from scratch. I have a good set of basic hand tools, just nothing to bend metal or weld.

Here's mine:

That's a Twin Air filter in there, soon to be a Uni.

Glad to have the battery out the way, as the rear fenders drop right in now.

UM - costs' more, and I'm worth it.

Its a nice place to have the battery but isn't the airbox supposed to supply as much volume around the filter as possible. Just seems like it kinda defeats the purpose putting the battery in there. Just a thought:confused:

yes it is an insane performance air box.and I would bye another 1 in a heart beat. Nice product.

and to the guy with the aluminum air box pic the wires will fit in there also with a small hole in the front top left of the box just big enough to fit the wire harness in . JUST THOUGH YOU SHOULD KNOW. as scene in my pic . No wires and all the metal brackets gone. Im going to 2 part epoxy paint the whole frame.

OH and to the guy with the question of not enough air ,if it has no lid and an outware to cover it will get all the air it needs.

I've seen that, just not sure how all that wiring would fit in the box.

I'm the kind of person who likes messing around with stuff. I just finished relocating my battery into my airbox last night. I was planning on buying a UM box in the spring, but I'm pretty happy with the way it came out.

I actually cut a rear lower part off my airbox and bent a piece of aluminum to replace the cut section and rear mounting bracket. It took me like 3 hrs, but it was fun to figure out. If I have time I'll post some pics tonight.

ooh, and I was able to use my lid with no modifications to.

That looks good. I like the way you routed your wiring.

I put a couple tie wraps around the front brackets of the box. I feel that keeps the box from bouncing and putting strain on the back welds. I hear the boxes have a tendency to crack back there. So far mine has been great. :D

That was one of the first things i did to my 400 is move the battery into the airbox it was the best thing, but after riding hard for a couple of months and hitting big jumps the plastic mounting tabs broke and i was kinda SOL so i bite the big one and got an aluminium box so far so good unless riding in really wet conditions.

Here's a few pics of it installed. I haven't had time to take it off for some good pics. It's a little showy from the test ride the other night.

I cut the rear of the airbox to accommodate the battery and the rear mounting bracket.

I wrapped the left, bottom, and right side with one piece of aluminum. Then wrapped the bottom and rear with another.

Everything was riveted or bolted together and silicone II was used to seal it all up. I don't have access to a welder, so I had to use rivets.

I unwrapped all the wires and re-wrapped them in high quality rubber electrical tape. I made a bracket for the starter solenoid so it was flush with the frame.

Like I said, I'll take better pics soon and post them.
