ive heard that some of you are cutting part of this? What is being cut and is it enough to have to make a jetting change. Im already on spot lower on the needle and im running a 122 main all I have is a HRC end cap. runs perfect right now.

Who's cutting their air filter???:huh

I personally would spend the $25 on a UNI and be done with it.

no people are cutting the cage.....lol. plus i have been told that the stock filter is just as good as the uni and it doesnt have the problem of the filter falling off.

I think it was the YFZ cage and the stock 450R filter, applies only to 06s.

I remember reading it somewhere!

Ah ok, I run no cage with my UNI and I've never had a problem with it falling off even when I did... now I run my own custom billet filter ring like the sparks, and I am also running my 450R UNI on the intake tube of my Ford Ranger!!

I believe they use the YFZ ring portion of the cage as a substitute for a billet ring!

I don't know, I am using the sparks ring and filters, along with 1 UNI!

dont try to get aorund any performance when it comes to intake filtering... u run the risk of a dirty engine and the valve getting damaged... if u want more performance throw in a cam or something trust me...

its all there for a reason

oh i am aware of most everything about a motor. I am acually getting ready to split the cases on my 300ex motor. I know that filtration is crucial to a motor, I just remeber seeimg some people cutting out a so called screen. Im not sure. I thought it was something that alot of people were doing so thats why i was asking. obvisly not so I will just oil my filter and put it back on.

I had a CRF 250R bike that had a backfire screen that I took out to get more air flow into the bike.

Yeah all it is there for is to prevent the filter from catching on fire from backfiring...though most filters are flame retardant now.

the stock filter is not flame retardant, thats why it has a backfire screen.

i run a twin air, it has special material on the inside so it does not require a screen. uni probly has the same? i dont know.

a guy on another forum had his catch on fire, running no screen with stock filter. i would just get a aftermarket filter or leave the cage/screen with the stock 1

you can cut the 04/05 screen as well. you cut the screen off for more air flow but you still need a solid mount. this is a cheap alternative to upgrading to a billet ring.

are you sure your not talking about people cutting the air box lid so its like the HRC lid?

You just cut the wire mesh cage off of the ring. Then either put silicone in the bolt hole in the filter or actually get a small nut and bolt to plug the hole

does it really make that much of a difference?

on the 04/05 it is supposed to make a difference. it may not be noticable by riding but the dyno will show it. on the 06 i have seen any dyno charts that proved this gained anything.

sounds stupid but is the stock air box lid completly flat, cuz i got mine used and i think it might have the HRC lid cuz 1/2 is flat and the other 1/2 is kinda open it has this curved lip thing going down, is this the HRC lid??

probably HRC or a stock one cut. Someting that will definatly help in holding the filter on better is on the filter when your ready to instal it wear it slips over the intake boot use brake kleen or something of that nature and clean the sealing surfaces of oil. they will stay on alot better. i have not had one come off doing this
