how can you tell the difference between a 86- 87 model?

There are some minor differences in the chassis, a-arms, and motor mounts. These are the easiest way to tell the year of the chassis. Post up some pics, it would be easier to look at it than to try to explain the difference. There are also alot of other things, but they are minor and a person really has to know 250R's to notice. Does it have a key switch? Thats an easy way to ID an '87.

Look where the motor mounts are in the very front of the frame, 86 are about 1 inch thick and 87 are 1/4 inch thick..

where the front two motor mounts are is a dead give away to distinguish the difference of a 87 vs. 86. the 86 is alot thicker, the 87 has 88-89 style front motor mount setup. also, in that same area, the 86 has an extra frame rail supporting the area. Goodluck!

I'm glad you got the answers you were looking for.

The information could also be found by examining the VIN number on the frame, and looking up which numbers corresponded to which years.

Keep in mind that many parts were interchangable (obviously). It is entirely possible to have an 86 frame with an 87 motor, along with other parts from various years. You can look up the serial number on the motor to tell which year it was.
