Is it ok to paint these parts, like motor mounts, ect? Will the paint hold up? Obviously pc would be best. But has anyone just painted these parts? What paint did you use?

Thanks

the paint will hold up well on the engine mounts and basically any other parts that arent being constantly rubbed on like the shifter and the footpegs if they're done right. sand down any residue or imperfections, use rubbing alcohol to remove any other contaminates then use very thin layers and let them dry completely in between coats. for my parts, i probably used about 8 coats of the color, then about 4 coats of clear. good luck. any other questions??

ditch the paint, get yourself a hobby pc kit and have a blast playing with it!

i did this R a few years back with a hobby gun!

How much is a hobby pc kit? I already ordered frame paint, and I am gonna sand blast and prime, paint, and clear coat it with pj1 paint. I plan to get skids, and frame guards so I think the frame will be ok. I would like to pc it if it wasn't too expensive. Is it ok, to put wheels, mounts, small parts in a regular oven, that is used for cooking? I know people do this with an old oven, but could I do it with the oven in my house?

www.columbiacoatings.com

you can even get a small oven from them for small parts.

dont bother with your oven that you cook in...lol get one from columbia or an old one from a salvage yard. thats all you need for small stuff

Ya, my parents might get pissed if they see me powder coating stuff in their oven......lol.

Should I get a air spray gun? I have an air compressor.

the hobby gun requires air, you will need a ventalated and filtered area to shoot it and it sounds like you have the means to strip brackets and such.

Ya, my dad knows someone who does commercial sand blasting or something. So I am gonna have my parts blasted there.

I could not find the ovens on that site. I can probably find an old one dumped somewhere. I see them out in the woods all the time, dunno if they work though???

What gun do you suggest? And how many onces or pounds of powder does it take to do something?

Thanks

If they are not listing one, check out www.harborfrieght.com

The eastwood and columbia guns are pretty much the same as the rest on the market and run less then $100. I dont recommend one over the other.

It depends on alot of things on how much powder it wouold actually take to do a part, theoretical coverage is somewhere around 200sq ft per pound.

Would something like this work?

http://cgi.ebay.com/Beginners-Powder-Coating-Oven-GET-STARTED-CHEAP_W0QQitemZ140077361937QQihZ004QQcategoryZ4292 7QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I think it could fit a rim.

that would probably be too small..12" is too small i think

lol, what you linked to is a toaster oven, great for making garlic bread but not so good for curing powdercoated parts:eek2:

It said it can get to 400 degree's. Wouldn't that work for anything that would fit inside it? I would like to get a full size oven, but my dad will probably complain about it taking up to much room in his garage. I might just get a big one anyway, definitely I come across one in the woods that looks like it might work.

I have one of them hoby kits. they are great for singal colors. But when I got into translucent colors or any 2 stage colors I had issues getting the seccond layer to stick good, more so in the corners.

But either way the kit has payed for itself many times over. As far as im concerned powder coating somthing is quicker than a spray bomb. Almaost the same prep, and pc is ready to bolt on in 30min after you spray it on.

here is a motor I did some pc work to with a hoby kit.

ok I know this is probably gonna sound pretty dumb and lame, but anyway. I've never seen or been explained to how powder coating actually works...so like where does the oven and all this fit in, and is it just like some special type of paint or what?? sorry but I honestly have no clue...

well from what i understand is powder coating is just a special powder and you hook electricity to the part you want to do spray the powder and the electricty makes the powder stick and then you bake it and then you have a vary nice looking stronger than paint finish

j450rking is right as far as im concerned. I know very little about it also.

I just used a house oven that I got for free from the dump. Dont use a oven you cook in, it makes the food tast funny. Probly bad for you to.

you can powder coat just about anything. it holds up really good. still looks new after a season of riding. i had those parts painted before but it dosent hold up at all. i dont hav any new pics, still waitin for a few other parts to complete the winter rebuild.
