I read somewhere in here that the stock swingarm skid plate is steel. Is it???
It looks like plastic to me.

yeah they are plastic, are absolute junk. stvemerz, if i were you i wouldn't wait till it crackes... back in the fall i was comin around a corner in about 3rd maybe 4th and a rock came out of no where. That stock skidplate didn't do **** for me.. ended up bending my brake rotor along with the rotor hub, luckly it was on that side or it would have taken out my sprocket as well. I'd invest in an aftermarket one as soon as you can, you won't regret it.

Actually this is another Mod I was thinking about doing. I've thought of buying a Cobra swingarm skid plate and than eventually the body and arm guards to match. The swingarm skid plate has to be .250 thick or it's a waste for me.

My 05 400ex stock swingarm skid plate is plastic. I don't know why Honda started putting plastic skid plates on. It must lower production costs and they figure everyone is going to change them anyway. My 03 400ex came with a metal skid. The swing arm is the lowest point and will always scrape when riding. The PRM .250" skid has worked excellent for me. Don't wait, buy a decent skid plate!!

I have armadillo skids front to rear and have had no issues. Only $240 for the whole set.
