my 440 ex normally runs a 42 pilot & a 170 main jet open lid wth K &n filter for the snow , mud etc I wanted to put the lid on & it stuttered & died & stunk of gas so I kept the 42 pilot put in a 150 main jet lid on adjusted the pilot mixture screw relentlessly & it wont idle or will run then die off idle & in the low rev range was really crappy & even mid range had a sometimes fluctuating rpm & after I got back from a quick ride it was smokin hot in -5 weather & i really never pushed it at all I have a 160 main I can try but im just pissed right now I hate jetting any ideas ?

Yeah i guess it was mostly on decel its gotta stroker cam 11-1 440 with slip on usually an open box in the summer & clean ridin conditions it wasnt bad open box with a 42 pilot & a 170 main but probably not perfect I tried in the fall putting the lid on then & choked & died on the fuel so now I tried a 150 main with the lid & it idles crappy & slows till it dies it wasnt real bad towards the top end but not great & at a steady mid range rpm it would slow down & pick up thats when it sounded like it was poppin a bit I havent adjusted the needle jet but I couldnt see where the clip position adjustment was & I didnt want the carb in a million peices

If it's an 05 or newer then it won't have the adjustable needle. I bought an 04 needle from the dealer and it works in my 06. Only cost a couple of bucks.

you need to back off of the pilot jet if you gonna run the lid now and you'll more than likely need to back off on the main jet a lil aswell.

Well this could very well be part of the problem as well. DO you know for sure if the needles are the same lenght/taper?

Also you need to play with all jets not just main when making major air flow changes like putting the lid back on. 150 is probably not enough fuel on top.

You should of turned the air-fuel screw in about 3/8 turns and went down on the main jet 2-3 sizes. Then if your ride it and at half throttle its not running right move your e-clip on your needle up one notch if you can.

I personally put an 04 needle in an 06 400EX and it runs great so I do know that portion to be true.

its an 02 440 ex so I imagine the needle is adjustable it had a dynojet kit put in 2-3 yrs . ago when it was a 400 by a local shop so i dont no if the needle was touched or not but it had the 38 pilot (stock) & a 170 main & ran great then with an open box I only bumped up the pilot to 42 when i made it a 440 open box
