Hello, I am in the process of rebuilding a 400ex. It is an 2001, and it ran strong, but smoked. I pulled the engine apart and measured the gap in the top piston ring. It measured about 1mm, in the manual it says that the service limit is .5mm. Would this extra .5mm of of gap come from the piston rings wearing down (hopefully), and not so much the cylinder?

I talked to someone that rebuilt a 1999, and they said all they did was a hone and std piston. I am hoping thats all I need to do because I have already ordered the piston and other stuff. But if I have to I guess I could sell the piston and get a bigger one. Let me know what you all think.

Thanks,
Kaleb
