check out my truck. it is dirty in this pic but it has a 283 in it. me and my dad are taking it out and putting in a 350 with nitrous. it should be in the 6-7's in the 1/8 mile.right now it only has a top speed of 150 because of the msd box

:eek2: on a 2wd? at 150mph that thing has to be squirly as hell, its about as aerodynamic as a brick, sounds like it should be pretty sweet, you should stroke that 350 out to a 383

That'd probably tear the frame a new one. I've never heard of anyone going over a 350 in an S-10.

We had a 383 in a 82 and a 454 in a 85.. getting another one soon though.

That truck won't go 150, I think you'll be more worried about making it to 50mph.. Sorry.... :ermm:

and by 4.6 im going to assume you ment 4.3

why would you bother putting in a 283, if your gonna put in the effort you might as well throw in a 350...

Stevie-D
01-23-2007, 04:06 PM
the 283 by itself wont get it up to 150. that is unless you were running it direct drive to a .5:1 axle or something:blah:

blasterfreak99

it will go too 150 we calculated the tire height, gear ratio, and the rpm the engine was turning when it hit the rev limiter. it came out to 149 and some change. the reason why we put a 283 in it is because my brother needed somthing to drive and we had an s-10 body and the 283 sitting around. we are upgrading the all of the drivetrain, its already got an aluminum driveshaft in it and we are putting in a taller gear ratio.we are also puting on the good traction bars. and btw my dad is putting my brothers 400 small block in it with ported and polished vortec heads, victor jr. intake, holley carb, and a higher flowing radiator. and actually it is pretty stable at 150. and i am talking about 6's in the 1/8,not the 1/4 like the pros use. i dont know why everybody is dissing this thing man. i realize that the 283 isn't that powerful but i don't think that you realize how light that truck is. and yes i do mean a 4.3 not a 4.6 sorry

 so you calculated top speed???? did you ever get it to 150? cause you said it feels stable at 150..... i just can see an s-10 doing 150. its aerodynamicly impossible basically.... at least with a 283 pushing it anyway, like i said before it would cut through the air like a brick.

blasterfreak99
01-23-2007, 07:32 PM
yes we claculated top speed.and yes we did get it to 150. it was actually 149 something but if you round it out it will come to 150. i don't care if you belive me or not i now how fast it will go.

blasterfreak99

here. calculate it out.

mph = (rpm x tire diameter) / (gear ratio x 336)

7400rpm x 26in tires / 3:73 gear ratio x 336

7400 x 26 =192400
3:73 x 336=1253.28

192400 / 1253.28=153.52

if you factor in converter slippage at full throttle(which should be minimal), it comes in slightly under 150. the rpm limiter chip in the 6al box is 7400 rpm. the truck WILL hit the rev limiter in drive. do the math yourself. even if it only pulls 145, that is still impressive for a truck you can drive anywhere, that runs on pump gas, and gets high teens in mileage.

as far as the engine only being a 283, it is bored .060 over and the displacement calculates out to 292 CID. This is not far from the 302 engines that powered the trans am series cars of the late 60's and early 70's, so don't tell me they can not make respectable power and they dont like to rev! It isnt like this engine was just thrown together with mismatched parts. The combination has had many hours of tuning along with ALOT of trial and error.

do you even have your learners permit yet? i have trouble believing that truck will actually travel 150mph.

i didnt say that i was driving and no i dont have it yet. i dont care if you believe me. there is the formula work it out. its sitting in my driveway and i will be driving it when i am 16. if its that important to you then lets setup a meeting and my dad will take you for a ride. measure the tires, check the rev chip do whatever it is that you want to do.

No offense but if I saw that thing pass me at 150 I don't know if I would laugh or be scared of it and swerve out of the way. At 14 I would be more focused on learning how to drive then beating ferrari's in a drag race driving an s10.

Ibuild drag motors and race cars if you think you can getin the 6's on the 1/8 in that thing guess again . first off are you gonan leave it on leafs if so you wont hook up it wont plant . second what size slicks are you gonna run ? and whats done to the 350 internal wise is the crank balanced what kind of pistons rods etc . no way will a sdime do a 6 in the 1/8 dream on and yes i do know what im talking about

There is no way that truck will do 150 in real life. Your calculations don't take into account rolling resistance, wind drag, and aerodynamics. You are of full of it, lil man.

Just my .02 I am not a engine expert but 7400rpm sounds a bit high for a small block V8 and also dont you have to take into consideration what gear the tranny is in?

underpowered
01-24-2007, 09:29 AM
dude 7400 on stock internals is pretty much impossible. you can get there, but i know you can't hold it there for very long. i hate to say it but sounds like you are blowing some smoke. I have worked with cars ever since i would hold a wrench and that s-dime is not nearly as quick as you might think. yeah it is light, but a stock 283 SBC won't push a brick to 150. and a TH350(guess thats what tranny you got) has not TC lockup option so at full throttle you will get alot of converter slip.

stuntman_12
01-24-2007, 12:14 PM
You may have calculated a theoretical speed of 150 mph, but there are MANY other factors at hand. Aerodynamics, trans slippage, and tire expansion, which would help your cause, but they better be z-rated!

A stock Hyabusa can theoreticaly reach a top speed of close to 300mph, but due to the real world and air it's much slower than that. The faster you go the more and more friction the air around you produces against your machine. It is highly unlikey that this model S-10 achieved more than 120 mph, much less 150.

Now have yall seen that 18-wheeler w/ the three F-18 jet engines strapped to it? It runs close to 300mph. It takes thousands of lbs of thrust and horsepower, a lil more than a practical internal combustion engine can do....

ilpadrino113
01-24-2007, 12:50 PM
well 150 does soudn unrealistic...

s-10's with any v8 in em are quick. I've never riden one with a built motor, there was a stock 302 and 350 that a friend of mine pulled from 70's chevelle and monte carlo that was fast as hell.

Threw some 4.10's in the rear and it would get to 70'sreal qucik, but would go much higher than 100.

like i said if it is that important to you then come on down and my dad will show you.you can overcome wind resistance with power.its not like this thing was just thrown together. dam this wasn't supposed to be a flame board i just wanted to show of my truck:mad:. it doen't have stock internals.i am not sure what is in it internal wise because we haven't rebiult it since we bought the block. the reason why we calculated it oput is because we havent hooked up the speedo to the TH350. sbc's like to rev they are not like thse boat anchors(big blocks) that make all their power down low.

and tat900 no one said that you dont know what you are talking about. me and my dad are putting on coil over shocks. and i corrected myself we are putting in a sb 400 bored .30 over, eagle steel crank,we have not ordered the pistons yet, vortec ported and polished heads, holley carb, victor jr. intake, high flow radiator, and it has custom exhaust with straight through mufflers, heddman headers, and i would say 26 inch tall slicks(not sure though).

Not flaming just asking for an explanation..

You calculated 153mph correct? Ok thats great if your in a vacuum. What about wind resistance which is humongous on that thing... The faster you go the more there is, and it increases exponentially if you look at it on a graph its easier to see. Also you have rolling resistance, even if the truck is light, theres still resistance there. That alone without the wind drag is enough to knock it down below the 150 mark.

You say wind resistance can be overcome with power? Well not really. It can overcome it to a certain point, but wind resistance will always win. Plus you calculated it out with maximum power to 153, so once you add in wind resistance you have no power left to "overcome" it.

How did you know it was going 150 anyways? GPS? I know the speedo in an sdime doesn't go to 160

blasterfreak99
01-24-2007, 07:45 PM
yesm i meant up to a point and i said in one of my earlier posts that even if it was 145 then it is still impressive for a truck that runs on pump gas, gets great gas mileage, and that you can use as a daily driver on the street. the speedo isn't hooked up on it that is why we calculated it out. i am sorry it should be around 140-145 when you calculate wind resistance. is that beleiveable??

Ok now no one is going to believe you at all..... You told us the truck HAS BEEN to 150 and handles pretty stable!! You already said it did, now your just going off calculations.... There is no way in HECK that truck is going to come close to 140. Your telling me your truck, which is basically a block on wheels is going to go faster than a Mustang GT?

Ok, thats fine, and we believe your calculations, all that we are saying is your truck is not going to go a calculated speed. Ask your dad what he thinks it will go once aerodynamics and air resistance are factored in, not to mention rolling resistance and transmission slip.
